Simple and moving,
By Annabel Gaskell "gaskella2" (Nr Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Mozart Question (Paperback)
A young reporter gets her big break when she has to go to Venice to interview a famous violinist. Her boss cautions her not to ask the 'Mozart question'. When she gets to meet the man, she is so overawed that she blunders in 'Well, I know I can't ask you the Mozart question," but recovers to ask, "I wonder if you'd mind telling me how you got started. I mean, what made you pick up a violin and play that first time."
The famously touchy violinist decides to open up. He tells the story of how as a young boy he discovered what he thought was his father's violin hidden away, and how he meets an old violinist in the streets of Venice who teaches him. Old Benjamin also tells him about how he'd had to play his violin to live in the Nazi death camps, and young Paolo finds out why his father doesn't play any more ... I found this to be a moving and poignant short novella. Although written in simple language, and presented as a beautifully illustrated edition, I think the story is not for under-tens who would need more background to understand and appreciate it. As an adult, I enjoyed it very much indeed.

Moving but for older children.,
By Sarah Curran "Booksinbrownpaper" (Oxfordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Mozart Question (Hardcover)
This is one of the most moving and eloquently written books I've read. You can't fail to be moved and gripped all at the same time as the story unfolds. The Mozart Question will undoubtedly bring tears to your eyes and Michael Foreman's illustrations are a delight to behold. One to let a child, 9+, pick off the shelf for themselves, not a book I would be inclined to give as a gift.

This book must be read!,
By Antigone (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Mozart Question (Hardcover)
I concur with previous reviewer about the beautiful writing of this book. It is an essential piece of literature. Yes, the issues it deals with are serious but necessary ones, but one isn't really aware of that throughout the whole book. It fits perfectly with curriculum coverage of WWII (yr 6 at our school). I gave it to my child at 10/11yrs old (mainly because I felt at a younger age the issues dealt with may not have been fully appreciated or too upsetting) and she was moved but throughly enjoyed and appreciated the writing and sentiments of this wonderful book. She actually thanked me for buying it!!!!!!!!!!!!
