This pair of discs brings together five of the legendary Mozart concerto performances, somewhat reluctantly approved of for publication by Curzon. Curzon was at the same time, a recording artist of choice but also a recording nightmare commercially. There are many of his recordings still in the vaults that were made at considerable expense, but which were then refused permission for publication by Curzon for reasons that few would consider essential.

As a result of these exacting requirements, his available recorded legacy is not as extensive as it might otherwise be and so these five concertos have achieved rarity value as well as musical value. Curzon brings a fastidious mind to bear on these works which work seamlessly with the chosen conductors and their joint views on performance. It is possible to find in these performances musical links that extend beyond the specific concertos themselves. This type of intellectual extension was typical of Curzon who was rarely satisfied with the results, always feeling that there was yet more to be revealed or explored in the future. Nevertheless for normal mortals these five performances have achieves artistic legendary status.

As with the rest of these re-mastered discs, the improvement in sound quality is very marked with the greatest improvements being with the older recordings. This set falls somewhere in the middle range being of late 60's to early 70's vintage. The reality is that early CDs simply did not have the capability of containing the full musical signal which had been achieved via analogue recordings since the 1950's. An example of convenience over substance similar to camera phones relative to good quality 'traditional' digital cameras and mp3 players compared to separates and large speakers etc.

The other favourable reviewers say it all really. These are wonderful performances that have a purity of radiance that is notable in the slow movements that elevates these recordings, as they are rightly acclaimed, to classic status. I would not be without these readings.

Wonderful playing from Curzon, full of grace, poise and elegance, these performances are up there with those of Perahia and Zacharias, any lover of these concertos should not hesitate, you will not be disappointed.

I can't easily speak for the other concertos on this 2 cd slim box, they seem excellent, but I find most Mozart recordings need a year or so to 'grow' on me before I'm sure if they are top-notch or not. And this is certainly subtle, so it's hard to tell so soon after I 've had the CD a month.

However, number 20 is one of those standout Mozart works, its emotions to clearly hewn, that firstly there are few truly great recordings that rise above blandness - so far only Richard Goode's recording of 20 really grabs me, in this slighlty un-Mozartian dark work.

Anyway, this recording of number 20 is the 2nd I have heard that is truly outstanding; Britten really gets under the skin of the orchestral part, and Curzon rises to this, finding the dramatic pulse of the work like few do, as it can;t be simply layed like most other Mozart works.

If you are a collector of recordings of Mozart piano concertos then this CD set is pretty worthwhile on that alone, I may add my deeper thoughts on the other works on this set in further months.

Currently they sound very classically Mozartian and subtle, certainly not romanticised as was the tendency in 60s etc.

The recording transfer comes out as really very good, a good 8 out of 10, easy to listen to and reasonable transparent, especially for the wind detail which is lovely, and impactful where necessary.

------------------------------

edit: I have listened to the whole CD now several times - the Britten-conducted performances (20 and 27) are superb, the Kertesz, much more pedestrian - I shall not be returning to these latter 2 as there are plenty of standard bearers in complete sets that are more listenable, to take precedence - Ashkenazy, Zacharias, etc.

A much under-rated performer of his time, but his sheer musicianship should be held up as an example to those who are just good technical performers.
