What a superb set this is, with the charm and delicacy of Mozart's sublime inspirations exquisitely realised by Ashkenazy, who conducts the performances from the keyboard. If you associate Ashkenazy with the firework displays of Rachmaninov, Chopin and some of the Beethoven sonatas, you should not be put off here: his consummate musicianship is everywhere evident, from the somewhat conventional early works right through to the later masterpieces. Not only is it the soloist's playing which is a constant source of delight: the orchestra, too, excels with playing of great refinement, especially so in Mozart's marvellous woodwind writing in the later concertos.
This really is a complete set, as not only do we get the two concert rondos, but also the double and triple piano concertos as well. In both of these Ashkenazy is joined by Barenboim, and, in the three-piano work, Fou Ts'ong. I found both performances intimate, enjoyable affairs, reminiscent, I believe, of what Mozart intended - without the 'slackness' identified in the original 'Penguin Stereo Record Guide' review, which also found 'both artists self-conscious'.
The recordings are excellent, with about half of them being digital. The piano is faithfully reproduced and orchestral detail refreshingly present. My only regret is that in No.17 the piano is inexplicably set further back than in the other recordings, and so some nimble fingerwork on Ashkenazy's part is lost beneath the orchestral tuttis, the problem being at its worst in the first movement. This, of course, is a matter of taste, and the 'Penguin Guide' says of this concerto in particular that the 'balance between soloist and orchestra [is] finely judged'. Oh well, you can't please everyone. This, however, being my only complaint about this set, I can warmly recommend it to any prospective buyer.

The partnership of Vladimir Ashkenazy, the finest pianist of his generation, and Decca, world leaders in sound recording has produced fine performances beautifully recorded.

Ashkenazy's flawless technique exposes the most delicate detail of Mozart's work. Decca's engineers have not only captured that detail perfectly but also the many solo performances from, for example, the woodwind section.

With a good hi-fi system and compatible headphones the individual pianos may be identified in the double and triple piano concertos. Even listening at MP3 level it's possible to hear squeaks from chairs and fingernails on keys!

For those unfamiliar with Mozart or his piano concertos, please try number 15. From its middle movement Ashkenazy produces a mellifluous piano sound. The final movement has an almost cheeky, happy melody. There is nothing dull or stuffy about any of Mozart's piano concertos as this boxed set proves admirably.

This is a very fine, consistent set. This does not imply a certain second-rateness, it states an absolute first-rateness! The orchestra are excellent throughtout, sensitive, listening and clearly directed. The sound is top-drawer Decca, refined, clear and full. Ashkenazy - often under-rated today - is simply the servant of the music. His Mozart playing is elegant, refined, always-musical, powerful when required and technically totally flawless. There is passion and reflection, but no "getting in the way" of the master's music. I can recommend this set without qualms, unless you must have period instruments and a jangling fortepiano. I feel Mozart would have enjoyed this set, I certainly did and I'm sure you will too.

I have several CD`s with Mozarts piano concertos, but the very best is these by Ashkenazy. He playes with vigor and energy so that the music is lively and inspiring. The piano sound is also excellent and full bodied. The violin group sound less convincing and bit shrill, but that is a common error for most recordings. This does not substract from the wonderful piano playing.

I am more of a baroque man than a classical, but I love Mozart as much as, if not more than, the average orchestral music enthusiast..
I have to say that this box set of the complete mozart piano concertos is as close to ideal, subtle passionate and mozartian with excellent ADD and DDD sound, as I could imagine a complete set by the same performers to be. I could envision maybe a sharper more baroque approach to the earliest works, but honestly ashkenazy play impeccably throughout and the orchestral accompaniment is a model of mozartian orchestral style - this could pass itself off in my book as the asmf or eco easily.
A generally unqualified recommendation really.
