As good as it gets 1 Dec 2010

For me this 1982 Met performance was a welcome chance to actually see two singers, Hildegard Behrens, who I knew of only by reputation, and Frederica von Stade, who I had long adored. But the revelation was Pavarotti, big but not bloated, more refined of voice than later and an actor. With Ileana Cotrubas also in the cast and James Levine conducting, this is just about as good as Idomeneo gets.

A charming performance 21 July 2011

This charming performance is from 1982 at the Metropolitan . If you don't mind the small stage and the somewhat oldfashioned stage directing you might enjoy a young Luciano Pavarotti and a young Frederic von Stade in a delicious, intimate opera. As usual the music by the Metropolitan Orchester and Chorus is wonderful. The solists are acting good and their singing is beautiful.

No doubt this is the best live recording of Idomeo. The cast, the production, the orchestra,the conductor are flawless. Superb ! Some must think this is too conventional. It's a matter of taste. I think I am not the only one to prefer productions of that sort.
