This modern staging of Mozart's Idomeneo makes for a stark contrast in the Rococo splendour of Munich's Cuvilies Theatre. For me, it works well, and I found the production very much in tune with the emotional agonies of the characters. The singing is very fine indeed, while more traditional minded Mozartians may find a tenor Idamante more difficult to accept, Pavol Breslik is an ardent and mellifluous advocate of the role. The rest of the singing is of a similarly high standard with John Mark Ainsley in the title role and Juliane Banse as Ilia giving particular pleasure. Kent Nagano conducts his Munich forces with urgency and attention to detail.Picture quality and sound are also of high quality. I would recommend this performance.
