Piano Concerto 21 was used in the soundtrack for the film "Elvira Madigan". It's rather dubious lumbering a major masterpiece with a film title, but no matter. Can any piece of classical music be more approachable than this? Can any be more beautiful? If there is a heaven, this should be played as you approach the gates, just to let you know everything is going to be alright. Piano concerto's 20 and 24 approach the same level, and the others nearly so. Brendel's playing is magnificent. He's one of Rob Cowan's main choices in his excellent book "Classical 1000", and is generally regarded as one the greatest interpretors of Mozart.

Alfred Brendel is the bees knees when it comes to the Mozart piano Concertos, there simply is no-one better. Some of these older recordings have a magic that comes across each time you listen. I first had this recording on vinyl and played it so much it began to wear out and started to sound a bit scratchy. Now I have the CD I can fully enjoy the quality of the playing, but without those irritating scratches.

If you are a fan of the Mozart Piano Concertos, I thoroughly recommend this CD.

Brendel is coming to be my favourite in Mozart's piano concertos. I have accepted for many years the view of professional reviewers that Perahia is tops in this genre but now I have my own thoughts on that. Perahia is, of course, a delight and anyone who has his recordings should never part with them. However, I have run comparisons of various recordings of Mozart's concertos - Ashkenazy, Perahia, Anda, Schiff, Uchida, Barenboim, Casadesus, and I find that there is a vitality about Brendel's playing which is sometimes missing with the others. Perhaps, for me, his greatest rival is Ashkenazy.

Some will contend for the poetry of the playing of other pianists and I accept that, but Brendel's music-making is far from being 'driven.' He does not miss the poetry in Mozart but he has that along with life and verve. `No doubt some of the credit for this must go to Neville Marriner and his Academy of St Martin's. Their playing is every bit as distinguished as Brendel's.

This is great value, five great concertos plus two concert rondos. The complete recordings were made from 1970-1984 but an earlier Penguin Guide said that " the transfers are of the very highest quality, as is the playing of The Academy of St Martin's In The Fields under Neville Marriner." Now that the great man has retired, we have lost one of the truly great pianists of our times and these recordings will become even more valuable. Not to be missed.

Alfred Brendel, with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Neville Marriner. Mozart: The Great Piano Concertos, Vol.1
This two CD set of Mozart concertos together with two concert rondos is a compilation by Philips Classical Productions of recordings dating from 1971 to 1978. The orchestral sound by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under Sir Neville Marriner seems a little tired. Brendel's playing is good, but I was disappointed by the lack of sparkle. Some of the pianissimos at ends of phrases are almost inaudible, but overall it has breadth, and understanding of Mozart's music as one would expect from this great pianist. The less than wonderful sound may of course be due to the age of the recordings and their transfer to CD.

However, the most disappointing aspect of this two-disc set now in Decca's DUO series is that the A major concerto, No 23, K488 has its first movement placed on Disc 1 and the final two movements on Disc 2. This is lazy and unacceptable practice nowadays. Had I known beforehand, I would never have bought this set. The second Concert Rondo, KV386, could surely have been omitted to allow the whole of K488 to be placed on one disc.
