First off I must confess to be a Jurinac fan par excellence. Her singing on this recording is immaculate, stylish, intimate, personal but above all beautiful. All the singers on this recording are stylish and do their roles good justice. Simoneau as the young Idomante is quite good and has a beautiful lyric tenor well suited to the music. Lewis as the tormented father Idomeneo also has a beautiful lyric voice, though a bit stiff to my ears at times. He is none the less one of the better Idomeneo of the many I have heard. Pritchard conducts in now old fashioned Mozart style but does it beautifully. The sound is mono but very good one. Highly recommended.

I revisited this recording once reminded of it in a comments exchange under my review of the less than wholly satisfactory Harnoncourt set and I rediscovered a very fine account which is an early stereo recording based on live Glyndebourne performances with a stellar cast. Above all, we hear the creamy, affecting voice of Sena Jurinac but also two stylish, Mozart-specialist tenors in Richard Lewis and Léopold Simoneau and a fine singer unknown to me, Lucille Udovick, as an alternately full-toned, fiery, then a lucent, touching, Elettra.

Furthermore, Pritchard conducts with real spring and élan. Of course, this version is "inauthentic" insofar as Idamante is a tenor and there are internal cuts in arias but neither feature is that damaging, especially as Simoneau is so grateful on the ear and Idamante being male adds verisimilitude for a modern audience.

The sound was always good for so venerable a recording and has long (i.e. since 1957!) been available on EMI; now the Brilliant label has issued it at a bargain price with a libretto online. Some will understandably prefer Gardiner's ultra-complete (with appendices) recording with a superb Anthony Rolfe-Johnson as the eponymous king but apart from him the singers here are more interesting.

There are other attractive live recordings from this era such as that by Busch in 1951, available very cheaply on the Zyx label, with a similar cast but Birgit Nilsson, at the beginning of her career, as Elettra and another in 1964 with a young Pavarotti as Idamante and Lewis reprising a role he sang until 1974 but they evince the flaws and slips inevitable in such cruelly demanding and exposing music and the Zyx issue is in poor sound. This studio recording remains by far the best of the older sets, better than Colin Davis's 1968 version, too.
