This classic set has been the yardstick for all other recordings of the opera since it's release and now has been brilliantly digitally restored. Although the young Joan Sutherland comes across as slightly reticent, there are no characterisically weak links in the casting, Elizabeth Shwarzkopf is particularly dominant as Elvira. Wachter as Don giovanni comes across as being perhaps the most menacing Giovanni on record. With brilliant backing from Guilini and the Philarmonia Orchestra this is an unbeatable set and is definetly the best overall recording, perhaps some may be lured by the Krips interpratation on Decca but this lacks a true baritone in the title role unlike this set with the brilliant Wachter.

Overall a highly reccomending set that will not dissapoint, especially at this price.

How could anyone resist a recording that brings together the vocal talents of Joan Sutherland, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Graziella Sciutti and Gottlob Frick? It's worth buying for the Act 1 finale alone, when those three exquisite soprano voices entwine in harmonic perfection. This is a deservedly classic production.

Don Giovanni is perhaps the greatest opera of all and has been very lucky on disc with many fine recordings. This one, however, just about tops the lot. It has Guilini and the Philarmonia at the top of their game, a simply wonderful cast with Waechter as the most demonic Don on record, and Legge's superb production. The recording still sounds well though not quite up to the latest digital standards, of course. But it is one of Legge's best. Just listen to the climax with chords thundering and Frick's sepulchral bass summoning Giovanni to hell. If the hairs don't rise on your neck then you can demand your money back!
For a refreshing alternative try Jacobs (HM) but all round this one is the tops.
