This recording indicated to be public domain has been available on a number of labels, mainly Italian. A review of the Opera D'Oro issue described the recording as shrill with distortion. This Frequence/Europa Musica issue has no such problems I can detect. It appears to have been recorded in studio before an audience whose presence is apparent only at the end of each act. The recording is faithful even to the extent of capturing some footfall which I guess is the maestro moving about on the podium. Not really an issue.
Masetto and Zerlina are what I would describe as very good provincial singers who do not let the side down. Alfredo Kraus as Don Ottavio was a much admired tenor for very many years and although the sound is a little dry and tight he is entirely acceptable. As the Don, Ghiaurov is splendidly sonorous. Which brings me to the reasons I bought the set. Sesto Bruscantini was incomparable in buffo roles but I had never heard him sing Leporello. Well I am very glad that omission has been repaired. Sena Jurinac is one of my all time favourite singers. This Donna Elvira was recorded when she was nearly fifty but still on excellent form. Gundula Janowitz as Donna Anna is frankly stunning and now my favourite Anna on disc.
This would be no-one's first choice but it does make compulsive listening. I bought it being quite prepared to hear it once then donate it to my local charity shop. They are not getting it.
Anyone should find something to interest them here. An excellent complement to one of the top recommendations. I got a very good used copy for £0.14 which is some bargain.
