I've always been a fan of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, especially with Beethoven or Mozart. You always know you will get something different. With his Cosi Fan Tutte you certainly do, and in particular the tempi. The greatest shock is an comically fast "Soave sia il Vento" - lost is the dreamy, pensive, gorgeous trio, only to be replaced by a Rossini-like romp. More allegro than andante. It's awful, frankly.

I didn't mind the slow "Sento, oddio" quintetto, which is also marked andante, but is more lento here. I won't list every marked change, but the warning is to expect variation throughout - not always a bad thing.

The singers are all fine to excellent. Margiono's Fiordiligi is superb. She copes with the range and offers wonderful expression. Her "Per pieta" is played very slowly, making it all the more difficult, but it works and she sings it exquisitely. Ziegler as Dorabella is equally accomplished.

Van der Walt is a creamy-toned Ferrando, but he sometimes pushes the top of his voice and loses grace. Cachemaille is fine as Guglielmo (Warning: his aria "Donne mie, le fate a tanti" is incredibly slow, and again, like the "Soave", fails completely). Steiger is one of the most expressive Despinas you'll hear. She may not have the lightness of touch you'd get with other Despinas but her recitative is maximised for characterization. Hampson is cast against type for Alonso but gives a sensitive and composed portrayal.

It's an uncut recording and one I'll keep, but on this occasion Harnoncourt misses the top spot on my list. If you want a stand-alone Cosi Fan Tutte then go for either Bohm (EMI and Decca) or my favourite Reni Jacobs recording for Harmonia Mundi.
