This is a wonderful CD of two seminal chamber works - the Mozart and Brahms Clarinet Quintets. They are performed by the Berlin Soloists with clarinetist Karl Leister. All of the musicians performing on this recording were former principals of the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan, so as you can imagine, they are consummate musicians in their own right. Leister, who joined the orchestra in 1959, founded the group called 'Blaeser der Berliner Philharmoniker' (Berlin Soloists).

One advantage with having a group of distinguished orchestral musicians performing these two works is that there is no battle of egos or any one performer using the occasion to demonstrate his or her virtuosity at the expense of musical substance. Instead we hear a unified vision of each piece with flawless ensemble and a consistency in tone that is very impressive. The Mozart quintet in particular is played in such a disarming, unaffected manner that one is able to really appreciate the larger melodic arcs in each movement with the minimum of distraction. Leister's playing throughout is of the highest order - sensitive, subtle and with an extremely velvety tone that caresses the ear. The string players are equally fine, performing with a warm, expressive sound that is never cloying. Tempos on the whole are very flowing - the ensemble resists the temptation to indulge - and this really helps the music to dance and float in the air when it needs to.

If anything the performance of the Brahms quintet is even finer. Here the musicians create long, unbroken lines that really hold your attention, creating an appropriately rapt and intense atmosphere.

This is the remastered transfer CD of the DG LP of 1976 of the Mozart Clarinet Quintet with clarinetist Gervase de Peyer and the Amadeus Quartett playing modern instruments. On that original LP, Mozart's Oboe Quartet also appeared, which on this CD has been substituted by the Brahms Clarinet Quintet. This performance of the Mozart Clarinet Quintet by Gervais de Peyer is among my favorites - it is in my opinion flawless. I'm sure that's why DG has saved it on their Galleria label. The other sublime performance, on original instruments though, which is very similar to this one artistically, though with obvious tone differences, is the Hogwood version on L'Oiseau-lyre with the clarinetist Antony Pay playing an original Basset Clarinet. That CD also contains the Oboe Quartet K. 370, and is a reference standard recording on original instruments. This performance of the Mozart Quintet with Peyer also appears in a compilation on the Eloquence label at a lower cost.
