About the Artist
The company features a mix of seasoned and young performers including Klara Ek (Melia), Sophie Bevan (Hyacinthus), Lawrence Zazzo (Apollo), Christopher Ainslie (Zephyrus), Andrew Kennedy (Oebalus), Marcus Farnsworth and David Shipley (Priests of Apollo). Classical Opera was founded in 1997 by conductor Ian Page. It specialises in the music of Mozart and his contemporaries, performing with its own period-instrument orchestra, and is considered one of Britain's most exciting and highly regarded young arts organisations.

This is a superlative performance of Mozart's first opera, written when he was only eleven. The singing and playing are outstanding, and conductor Ian Page conjures a wonderful array of colours and emotions from his forces. The sweet-toned American countertenor Lawrence Zazzo and rising star Sophie Bevan in the title roles are magnificently matched by Klara Ek and Andrew Kennedy, who share the opera's most exquisite number, an enchanting duet of remorse and lament, and Christopher Ainslie is splendidly sinister but real as the wicked Zephyrus. The orchestral performance and recording quality are superb, and the recitatives are particularly worthy of praise, full of sweep and drama and enlived by some dynamic continuo playing. This recording is the first in a projected complete cycle of Mozart operas by Ian Page and Classical Opera, and this cycle promises to be a hugely exciting and important project. Highly recommended.
