1.0 out of 5 stars Just use the manual and the web, 27 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Moving from Windows to Linux (Charles River Media Networking/Security) (Paperback)
I bought this book to help me migrate from Windows to SuSE Linux a couple of months ago.

I have hardly opened it, and when I have, it has hardly been worth it. The information in the SuSE manuals is better and more detailed, and the questions that the SuSE manuals do not cover can usually be answered from the web or experimentation.

A bit of a disappointment really.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Number 1 Book of its kind, 15 Jan 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Moving from Windows to Linux (Charles River Media Networking/Security) (Paperback)
I have been a Linux admin for about 5 years. People are always asking me how to move from Windows to Linux. There are only a few books on the market that do this, and this is simply hands down the best. Every detail you need is explained thoroughly. There are lots of pictures so you can make certain you are doing the right thing. Everything from installation, to running a web server is covered.

If you are wanting to learn Linux or move from Windows to Linux you simply can't get a better book. I was so happy with this book that I emailed the author to thank him for writting this!

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING, 5 Jan 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Moving from Windows to Linux (Charles River Media Networking/Security) (Paperback)
I just finished this book and I have to say I am impressed. This book takes a Windows user step by step into the world of Linux. You are given the basics on the Linux operaring system, history, how to install it, etc. But most importantly, in my opinion, the author then shows you how to do practical things with Linux. He shows you how to use Open Office, GIMP, and several other programs. If you are using Windows, and want to know what Linux is all about, this is simply the best book you can get. I encourage you to get it right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars PRETTY GOOD, 24 Feb 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Moving from Windows to Linux (Charles River Media Networking/Security) (Paperback)
This book covers all a novice will need to know. It takes you through the installation, shows you around the shell, KDE, Gnome, Open Office, Gimp, etc. The end of the book even has advanced topics like Shell Scripting and Samba.

You just cannot get a better book for a novice to learn Linux...
