Book Description

22 Dec 2000 Digital Media Design
Moving Type, Designing for Time and Space, both a book and a cdrom, presents the fundamentals of typographic design for the screen. Serving as both a design resource and educational reference, commercial and artistic applications of typography in time-based media are used to illustrate how the elements of space, time, and motion affect the traditional, print-based, understanding of typographic form and communication.

The fundamentals of moving type, built upon the principles which underlie good typography, are explained and demonstrated. Design Educators from CalArts, California College of Arts and Crafts, Parson's School of Design, Art Institute of Boston, University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Connecticut present innovative student work which demonstrate how these educational programs are integrating moving type into the design curriculum. Extensive professional profiles that showcase five diverse studios working in broadcast, film, and interactive design include Yugo Nakamura of MONO*crafts, Paul Sych of Faith, Joel Marcus of M: Design + Direction, 3 Ring Circus, and Pablo Ferro of DePablo Productions.

5.0 out of 5 stars definately the right approach 26 Jan 2003
There are many books available on motion graphics at the moment but this must top the list of must buys. The book is basically divided into two sections: a guide to designing moving type and a showcase of work from students and professionals alike. But where as most books just show you an endless number of photos and illustrations, this one is accompanied by a CD-Rom that contains all the examples used in the book. It's an essential part of the package, especially if you consider the subject we're dealing with. I hope that other publications in this area will follow this example.

Coming from a print background, I have had to develop and prepare myself. The digital age has opened so many new doors for me, in a purely creative context. This book has helped me understand and appreciate the multitude of things one can do with the help of new software. The important thing is that it has been refined to a beautiful a subtle art.
