Really useful book!,
By A Reader (Bournemouth) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Moving On: From Short Story To Novel (Secrets to Success) (Paperback)
This book is a must-have for any writer who has tried short stories and now wants to write a novel. It explores in detail the differences between short stories and novels - and it is not simply length! Della Galton explains why novels need sub-plots and deeper themes, and characters who have an entire back story. Why using a single viewpoint works well for short stories but might be too limiting for a novel. The whole thing is written in a lovely, easy to read style. There are lots of examples - including one wonderful short story which Della then explains how the same basic idea could become a novel. I just wish this book had been available a couple of years ago when I started writing a novel. I will refer to it often when writing the next one.

This easy to read book does what it promises on the cover - that is, to show the differences between writing short stories and novels, and how to bridge them as a writer moving from one to the other. In straightfoward language, it builds confidence to the point where you feel all things writingwise might just be possible after all! I particularly appreciated the section that differentiated a synopsis and blurb. Plenty of examples, plus the summary at the end of each chapter: most helpful. A good book to have on your shelf!

All short story writers should read this.,

I think many writers begin writing short stories because they think it is easier than writing a whole novel. That's understandable - a short story might be one hundredth of the length of a novel. And when those writers have successfully sold a couple of short stories, the urge is there to think bigger. However, the short story and the novel are two very different beasts. Being able to write one does not guarantee that you can write the other. I know short story writers who have tried but failed at writing novels, and I also know published novelists who cannot write short stories.Della's book, Moving On, goes a long way to explain the differences between the two formats and the points short story writers need to consider. Novels are much more than short story ideas with a few more words and a bit more description, a point Della clearly explains. In a series of short, easily digestible chapters she details the variety of points to consider: characters, plots, sub-plots, theme, viewpoint, tense and more. What this book also, successfully, achieves is clarifying the two forms of writing. So, it's immensely useful to short story writers who are thinking about the great novel, but it is also a great book for budding short story writers who want to learn more about their craft. If you want to write short stories, reading this book will help you clarify whether your idea is suitable for a short story or a novel. And if you want to write a novel, it shows you what you need to consider, in order to turn it into a novel.
