Product Description

CD Description

The debut album of a young singer-songwriter with impeccable credentials. Rosie Doonan's debut solo release contains eleven self-written songs, performed both solo and with her band. The style is contemporary but underpinned by a folk roots sensibility inherited from her grandfather, legendary Irish piccolo player John Doonan, and father Mick Doonan, member of Hedgehog Pie and The Doonan Family Band and folk scene stalwart since the 1970's.

Rosie is fresh from a three-year musical partnership with Ben Murray (ex Tarras) during which time they produced Mill Hill, an album of new songs and traditional classics, and were nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award. Now she moves into her own territory with a collection of songs showing her versatility as a songwriter, arranger and instrumentalist, and her true, clear voice installing her among contemporaries such as Nerina Pallot, Kate Walsh and KT Tunstall.

This is Vin's most accessible album. Recorded with a back up band of estimable musicians, some of the tracks have a folk-rock feel while others are acoustic ballads. Then there is Vin's virtuoso tin-whistle playing and a great electic guitar solo playing Bach's 'Jesu, joy of man's desiring' giving the album a surprise twist at the end.
But to appreciate Mr Garbutt, you have to listen to the lyrics. On this album they vary from discussing the fact that we have built our lives around the car rather than vice versa and the consequential effect on our 'green and pleasant land', to the ethics of cloning embryos for organs, to coal-mining (viewed in two different ways in consecutive songs), to the tale of an Irish girl travelling to Britain for an abortion, to the Kurdistan genocide (written pre Gulf War #1). It sounds heavy, but with Vin's sense of melody and pathos it is both thought-provoking and pleasant to listen to.

This record is one of the finest singer songwriter albums to emerge from the burgeoning female recording population. It defeats my understanding that we have not heard a lot more of Rosie, whose talent far outstrips that of many more celebrated individuals. A fine singer and feeling lyricist she should be treasured.

Beautiful voice 25 July 2010
Format:Audio CD
I first heard this lady sing in my local pub in Walton Wakefield and i must say that i was quite astounded by the clarity and pureness of her voice. It's such a refreshing change to the rubbish we hear on the radio, the songs are well written and i would put her alongside another of my favourite atistes, Judie Tzuke. This album has been playing constantly since i bought it a few months ago and the only criticism i have is, it doesn't last long enough. Can't wait for the next one Rosie.
