Wow, this got two five star reviews already?
Possibly one of the worst movies I've seen in a long while.
From the flaky storyline to the plethora of continuity gaffes, it really did nothing for me.
It's a fairly typical road-movie - two people who aren't going to get on, stuck in a car for a prolonged period of time and guess what.....hilarious things happen. Clearly, I missed them if they did. With Jon Heder in the cast and the occasionally excellent Rutger Hauer, I thought this had some potential but chunks of the story just didn't make sense. There was a totally superfluous dream-sequence which kept popping up throughout but served little purpose other than to highlight more continuity issues. Kunis was about the only saving grace in the film and although I was not aware of her film work, she did well with what she was given in terms of dialogue.
It seemed very much to me that this was a film that hadn't been thought through properly. It appeared to be trying to be a gross-out comedy? (There were a few moments but nothing that hadn't been done better before and certainly nothing that made me more than mildly chuckle).
Then, it looked like it might take a turn for the better with a lovely scene with the main characters mentally ill father but this was quickly swept under the carpet. Then it turned into a fairly formulaic romance story although so much was not explained and the transformation from "I hate this girl" to "I love this girl" was all a little unexplained.
All-in-all a truly baffling movie. It had so much potential with a mostly excellent cast but fundamentally, it felt like it didn't know what it was as a movie. As such, any one area which could have been fleshed-out to become the core constituent ended up being watered down.
