Product Description

CD Description

Ugly Duckling is back with their fifth full length album MOVING AT BREAKNECK SPEED. After more than a decade in the music business, Young Einstein, Andy Cooper and Dizzy Dustin are well accustomed to the recording process and for their latest LP the boys dug deep into their bag of tricks to create what they feel is their most dynamic and complete release to date. MOVING AT BREAKNECK SPEED is an exciting and musically exotic, adventure story that has our desperate heroes circling the globe to outrun an evil gang of super criminals determined to put an end to UD once and for all. The record is made up of 14 power packed tracks that showcase Ugly Duckling s classic production sound and the flavorful, humorously soulful vocal styles of Dizzy and Andy. By the time you work on your fifth record, you ought to know how to do it, right? asks Andy. I think we put all of the pieces together to make a really, really good album . Inspired by the extensive touring and constant performing that have taken Ugly Duckling around the world many times over, MOVING AT BREAKNECK SPEED captures the troubadour spirit of a traveling hip hop band. We ve always wanted to make an album like this but we needed to do a decade of research first, jokes Dizzy. Now that we ve worn out a couple passports, we can speak about globetrotting. Einstein chimes in, When you re touring for a living it feels like it s you against the world, and that s a big part of the new album. In terms of production, Ugly Duckling is as solid as ever. Einstein and Andy dug deep into the crates to develop a sound that was both banging and in line with the international themes of MOVING AT BREAKNECK SPEED. It s kind of like the soundtrack to an adventure movie but funkier, says Einstein. Fans of the Ugly Duckling production style will not be disappointed by the new music. All of the tracks are filled with crispy drum loops that support a wide array of boldly melodic and constantly changing arrangements. We love the power of a good chord progression and we re always looking for something magical, beams Andy. When we come up with a part that sparks our collective imagination, the songs sometimes write themselves . Ugly Duckling makes music that can lift the listener to another place and with this new LP, the band did everything but buy their plane tickets.

5.0 out of 5 stars UD's back with another classic 29 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD
Yet another classic set from the UD's. Fun and funky, Andy and Dizzy's rapping on this album is amazing, and Einstein even gets a verse (which is probably one of favourite moments). There really isn't a bad tune on this album. Can't recommend it highly enough, and if you like it, check out their back catalogue as well (particularly 'Taste The Secret'). Oh, and go and see them live if you get the chance - best hip-hop act I've ever seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars UD are back 16 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A welcome return for Andy, Dizzy and Einstein. This is their sixth album and still as good as they've ever been. If you're already a fan then you know what to expect, and if you're not you'll get brilliantly funny lyrics expertly fused with wicked samples and beats. This is absolutely miles better than anything in the uk rap charts at the moment (or ever actually). Coming from an Englishman as well. Totally original, these guys have set the bar very high indeed. Top drawer fellas. Best album of the year of any genre hands down.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as ever! 30 Oct 2011
By Charlie
Format:Audio CD
Ugly Duckling are one of those classic, timeless groups who's music never seems to age. As the guys in the band would say they're FRESH! The new album more than lives up the this brilliant band's back catalogue of excellence. Funky, jazzy hip-hop with smooth flowing lyrics both witty and profound.

Buy it and everything else they've ever done NOW!

2.0 out of 5 stars Really...? 16 April 2013
Format:Audio CD
For my money, UD have been on a steady decline for some time now. Fresh Mode, Journey and Taste the Secret are all stone-cold classics, but nothing since has lived up to the promise. It's not that their music has gotten worse, it just hasn't really evolved in the past ten years (the awful "singing" on Audacity notwithstanding). For this reason, it has gotten so totally predictable that I just find it hard to listen to a track in its entirety. There is nothing bad on this album, there's just nothing particularly good and nothing even remotely surprising.

As MCs, Andy and Dizzy are still more than capable and Einstein is a DJ of rare prowess. The problem with their later albums is mainly in the production. The beats are far too dense much of the time (they love their horn fanfares, don't they...?) to sit with the vocals, almost to the point where you're struggling to listen. Perhaps this is why the clear standout track here is the one full-length instrumental, Einstein Buys a Monkey, which, ironically, has no horns...

It's still fun, it's still very much its own thing and, lord knows, it's still a hell of a lot better than the utter drivel which passes for contemporary hip hop. If you're new to UD, I dare say this may be the best thing you've heard in a long time. But you're still better off with their earlier albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is very good but could have been better.... 13 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
First of all it's UD, and they can do no wrong in my eyes, and this is a very good album, BUT I feel that they missed a trick with this as they slipped back into their older style.

For me, the 'Audacity' album was defo their best, mainly because they changed their style with some surprisingly very good singing, and this album should have developed on that. It's still top drawer funky hiphop in the UD style, but I think it was a missed opportunity....some more variety would have been welcomed.
