Review

Michael Scott has penned a thoughtful, accessible and easily readable book for trauma survivors. It will act as an excellent guide for survivors, their families and can be used by the individual instead of therapy, as they await therapy or as a workbook to accompany their therapy. It is grounded in the Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (CBT) approach and flows easily from helping people understand their experiences and problems after trauma, to managing then treating their problems and symptoms. In giving individuals practical solutions and a range of options it allows control to be regained. Moving on after Trauma offers options for the reader to do exactly that; move on following traumatic experience. - Dr Alastair Hull, Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy, NHS Tayside

Michael Scott has produced an excellent book that should be of immense value to sufferers of PTSD and their relatives. I particularly like its clear link with theory and evidence and it is replete with useful case examples. Scott’s extensive clinical experience in dealing with these problems is evident in his thorough and sensitive handling of the topic. Packed full of strategies and tips for dealing effectively with trauma symptoms and associated problems this book should be at the top of a sufferers self-help list. – Adrian Wells, Professor of Clinical and Experimental Psychopathology, University of Manchester, UK

"This valuable guide explains the puzzling and disturbing symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and what to do about them. There is a wealth of practical wisdom, supported by many practical examples, that cannot fail to inform and help trauma victims and their families" - Chris Brewin, Professor of Clinical Psychology, University College, London.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous self-help book, enabling people to really "move on" after trauma, 8 Sep 2007
By Stephen Gradwick (Liverpool, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Within today's world, trauma and its consequences are touching more and more of our lives and all too often, the actual victims are rarely the only ones left suffering from the effects.

In his latest book, Dr Mike Scott has taken trauma victims, their families, loved ones, friends and carers on a unique journey; helping them in a real and meaningful sense to be able to finally "move on after trauma".

Rather than attempting to deal solely with helping the victim recover from the direct effects of their situation; through his clinical expertise and in-depth understanding of the extended consequences and effects of trauma, Dr Scott has provided the means for all of those suffering these effects, to really regain their quality of life.

Although this book is of undoubted value to clinical practitioners in the fields of post-traumatic stress and counselling; the real delight of this book is that it has been written in such an friendly, easily accessible manner, that it will appeal to those suffering from the effects of trauma and stress who are looking for the means to help themselves and regain control over their lives!

The book itself contains twenty different case studies dealing with a panoply of traumatic situations and the methods used in each case to readjust to normality. Using the Cognitive Behavioural approach, Dr Scott provides simple, but effective tasks to build up in a structured way towards enabling people to see the real value to be had from re-investing in life!

Sadly, not all victims of trauma, will necessarily have someone to help them cope, to urge them to make an effort to become the person they once were and to see the value of moving on, but even without that support, by reading through this book, they will be able to see that recovery is possible and is within reach!

This is an outstanding gem of a book which I am delighted to have in my library!

By Dr Wal (Notts) - See all my reviews
In the modern world we live, I have recommended this self-help book to many patients, and their relatives. Whether it be ill-health sustained from trauma due to war, terrorism, road traffic accident, assault, or other adverse life events, this book provides a clear pathway forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding self-help book, particularly for sufferers of PTSD, 28 May 2008
By D. SMITH (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This excellent easy-to-read, easy-to-digest self-help book displays warmth, compassion and understanding to its target audience throughout. It will be of immense help to sufferers of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in particular, who will gain some relief from the first page of the Introduction alone. This book feels like the 'friend who truly understands'. Dr Scott clearly has the expertise and wisdom to help trauma sufferers 'make sense of events' and move forward in their lives. His book delivers what the title suggests.

This book should be read by every GP and 'prescribed' to patients struggling with the horrendous consequences of Trauma. It will also be of immense value to those working with Children and Vulnerable Adults, due to the knowledge and awareness skills to be gleaned from it in relation to signs and symptoms of Trauma.
