Product Description

Product Description

Nancy Sinatra stars in this swinging Sixties television special, recorded when she was at the height of her pop fame. Nancy performs here with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Lee Hazlewood and her almost-as-famous, blue-eyed pop.

From Amazon.co.uk

Network television was already wrestling with a generation gap and the rowdy cultural upheaval posed by rock when American network NBC aired this 1967 special for Nancy Sinatra, with younger viewers increasingly tuning out the typical videotaped studio productions that typified TV specials. To sidestep those conventions (and, one suspects, to showcase the star's modest performing gifts to best advantage), director Jack Haley Jr. shot Movin' with Nancy on film in and around Los Angeles, yielding sequences that anticipate the visual experiments that would characterise music videos more than a decade later.

The results are intriguing: for Sinatra's fans, the chance to see her in all her leggy, mini-skirted glory will be irresistible, but amateur pop sociologists will be at least as fascinated by the period details and some unwittingly bizarre undercurrents. For the putative teen viewers of the day, there's the psychedelic montage of "Some Velvet Morning", one of several duets with Sinatra's frequent partner at that time, Lee Hazlewood (a country-tinged, B-team Sonny to her blonde variation on Cher), interweaving the two singers on horseback and making much out of bewildering references to Euripides' Phaedra. For the grown-ups, there are segments teaming her with Dean Martin (awkwardly addressed as her "god-uncle") and Sammy Davis Jr., as well as a reverential sequence in which she caresses oversized posters of her famous father (including a still from his then-current crime feature, Tony Rome, depicting him with a menacing pistol) that raises all sorts of knotty psychiatric issues.

The mix of Rat Pack glitz, flower power, and mainstream pop gets an added kick with Day-Glo fashions cut to Carnaby Street lines, vintage commercials for Royal Crown Cola ("It's a mad, mad, mad, mad cola!"), and pop covers that likewise lock in a sense of temporal dislocation as Nancy gamely tackles "Up, Up and Away" (in a hot air balloon, of course) and "Who Will Buy?" from Oliver!, here goosed with go-go powered dancing. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

Movin with Nancy is for me a true delight. A happy mix of 60's fun and energy enhanced by great guest appearances from the phenomenal Lee Hazlewood, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis jr. (very funny). The quality of this product gives it that made yesterday look, with superb locations and production values which bring a bright fresh look to the material. Nancy looks marvellous and gives a great performance in all of her many songs and duets. Her fans will treasure this recording and will not be dissapointed. Like me you will only be left wanting more.......

Movin' With Nancy was a US TV Special that was first broadcast on the NBC network in December 1967 and featured Nancy Sinatra at the height of her commercial success and sixties fashionability. It was unusual in that it dispensed with the studio format almost completely, taking the singer outdoors where she features in a series of musical vignettes, accompanied in part by her guests, including Rat-Packers Dean Martin, Sammy Davies Jr. and old 'Daddy' Frank himself. Her producer and songwriter Lee Hazlewood also turns up to enjoyable effect. The whole hour-long production is colourful, endearing and still very watchable.

One song follows another as Nancy moves around, travelling in a hot-air balloon and in her very own customised 57 Ford T-Bird, changing outfits and styles - from 'go-go boot' vamp to 'haute couture' classy - and meeting those who cross her path to share a song or two. The songs themselves are a mixed bunch but highlights are undoubtedly Sugar Town, sung by a mini-skirted Nancy in the backwoods, and the fabulous Nancy and Lee classic, Some Velvet Morning. Even 'Daddy' (such is the way he's billed) pitches in with a couple of his own before joining his daughter for a rendition of their duet, Somethin' Stupid, a huge international hit that year.

All in all, this 60-minute special is an absolute treat for Nancy fans and/or those who love their uncomplicated sixties glitz. The lady is sweet and lovely throughout, and though her image has been much copied and parodied since, there was no sixties icon quite like Nancy Sinatra and here she is at her absolute best. Thoroughly recommended.

*The above 2007 DVD release lacks the commentaries that featured on previous editions, but it does contain the complete special as well as the Royal Cola commercial in which Nancy featured at the time. The transferred print is also a little grainy in places, though this is not a significant problem and doesn't mar the viewing experience.

A great DVD of well remembered TV show except for the corny US sponsors' commercials which are also included. Fortunately when this show was broadcast on British TV those commercials were edited out. However there are superb vocal performances from Nancy and Dean Martin to be enjoyed again.

I bought this as a present for a young adult who is steep in the cultures of her parents. It's a weird and wonderful archive.
