5.0 out of 5 stars Incomparable 22 Nov 2007
Format:Audio CD
One of the outstanding albums of the past 30 years; rightly lauded at the time and still in a league of its own. Persian Love is one of my all-time Desert Island Discs - haunting, mesmeric, delightful and hugely enchanting.
I only write this due to my astonishment at the 2 star review already posted. Please ignore and enjoy this magnificent album.

5.0 out of 5 stars history 22 Sep 2004
Format:Audio CD
This album contains the greatest track of any that I have in my many hundreds of CDs. When this album came out in 1979 it blew my mind away and it still does today.
"Persian love" contains the most throbbing, incandescent vocals that one may ever be priviledged to hear, coupled with ecstatic trademark czukay guitar riffs and a pungent mix of special effects.
I have stunned many people with this track over the years.
You buy it, hear it, you can do the same.
View the album as a whole and you will find its influence in such a lot of contemporary music, much the same as the film "Brasil" did for modern cinematography>

5.0 out of 5 stars it's a different mix! 23 Feb 2008
By freewheeling frankie TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
For anyone that hasn't heard this before, the 2 star review above does kind of indicate it isn't for everyone, but for those with the right ears, it's by turns very silly, extremely psychedelic, absolutely beautiful, and at all times very musical and tuneful - there are no scary grating noises on here. The basic tracks of live instrumentation are heavily augmented by samples - before samplers had been invented. Neither Holger Czukay (whose best solo record this is) nor anyone else has made an album quite like this, nor probably ever will. The album title is very deliberate - these songs are movies for the ears. Give the man an Oscar!

For anyone who loves this album and is thinking of getting a nicely remastered version of this to replace an old lp or cd or is simply tempted by the bonus track I'd say, do buy this but keep the old one. Because the whole album is a different mix, well worth having as an alternative version. And the mastering is inevitably better. As it says in the booklet, buried on page 9 (there's no mention of the different mix on the sleeve): "The CD consists of the entire album in its first original mix from 1979 before any sound exciters (effects) were added to the sound..."
I'm not quite sure what they mean by this - the sound effects, spoken snippets and musical "samples" (added using some sort of 70s dictaphone which Holger adapted for this purpose) are all present and correct. But it's definitely a different mix, perhaps less cluttered than the original, but also a fraction less psychedelic.
Plus as a bonus track you get an excellent instrumental version of Cool In The Pool, which is much more than just a backing track - there's a guitar in the foreground and extra samples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece 29 Nov 2010
By Lewian
Format:Audio CD
As you can see from other reviews, this one is not for everyone. I can kind of understand that some people don't like Holger's voice and his weird sense of humour. Well, he is neither a singer nor a comedian, but he likes to have a bit of fun. This seems unusual on an album that, in terms of the amount of work put into it, should be pretty much on top of what pop/rock music (or however you want to call this) has to offer. I think that there are thousands of small bits and pieces from the radio and other sources woven into the four songs that are never short of surprises. This is one of the albums I have listened to the most, and certainly a hundred times or so I discovered something new I wasn't aware of yet. This happened when digital sampling didn't yet exist and everything had to be done manually. This means that much more thought went into how precisely the snippets should be used and combined than what current musicians would do who have it much easier (in that respect, Eno/Byrne's "My life in the bush of ghosts" is a similar beast, but Czukay's compositions are more complex and surprising).
However, this is not "noise"; you can also hear some Can pals (it's particularly worthwhile if you are a fan of Jaki Liebezeit's drumming), and you can still describe what's on this record roughly as "songs". Well, very strange ones, though.

3.0 out of 5 stars SAMPLING PIONEER 19 Oct 2003
By Pieter Uys HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Cool In The Pool is a busy mix of funky beats, pop lyrics and samples, including an operatic voice, whilst Oh Lord Give Us More Money is a long exploratory piece in the progressive rock tradition, with jazzy sections, interesting edits of voices that flow in and out of the mix and strange sound effects.

The other long track, Hollywood Symphony, provides more of the same spoken vocals, voice samples and what sounds like a symphony orchestra on acid. One can see whence bands like Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV got some of their inspiration!

What makes Movies really worthwhile however, is the exquisite Persian Love, an Iranian love song taped from short-wave radio and embellished with just the right elements to turn it into an atmospheric jewel of a track. The longing in the voices is carried on a lilting beat and exquisitely edited to form a perfect whole.

Brian Eno and David Byrne did the same on tracks like The Carrier and A Secret Life on their classic collaboration. So if you love My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, you’ll be enthralled by Persian Love.
