Review

Twenty top directors (including Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, the Coen brothers, Tim Burton, Pedro Almodovar, Lars von Trier, John Woo, Wong Kar-Wai and Jean-Luc Godard) talk about the nuts and bolts of their craft.

Product Description

From Scorsese and Lynch to Wenders and Godard: interviews with twenty of the world's greatest directors on how they make films - and why.

Each great film-maker has a secret method to his moviemaking - and each is different. In Moviemakers' Masterclass, Laurent Tirard talks to an illustrious collection of today's greatest directors to get to the core of their approach to cinema. The results shed a unique light upon the mysteries of the directorial process. Martin Scorsese, we learn, likes setting up each shot very precisely in advance. Lars von Trier, on the other hand, refuses to think about a set-up until the day of filming. And Bernardo Bertolucci tries to dream his shots the night before . . .

Other directors featured include Woody Allen, Pedro Almodovar, Tim Burton, the Coen brothers, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Wong Kar-Wai.

I have read a lot of books on filmmaking, but this would easily be my favourite. Each of the featured directors shares their particular technique and approach, and details problems they have encountered (and problems they see others commonly encounter - especially beginners). The book is highly digestable, and my only complaint is purely selfish: I wish there was more!! If you are interested in making films, buy this book without question.

By Martin I. Smith VINE™ VOICE

Tirard asks some of the world's greatest directors the same set of questions over and over. This technique gives true insight into the different approaches of each director and makes the book easy to pick up and flick through for inspiration. Each director is very honest and the lessons are valuable and encouraging to the wannabe filmmaker (like me!). Directors include such geniuses as Jean-Luc Godard, Oliver Stone, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Lars Von Trier, John Woo and Takeshi Kitano. That's quite a list, I think you'll agree. A more helpful filmmaking book I've yet to find (though Lloyd Kaufman's books rule too). A good investment for future directors.

This fascinating book is a compilation of conversations with some of the world's most prominent directors. For each director you learn of their approach to film making, to directing, to the audience, to the actors, providing you with insights into their world and their films. Accessible, diverting and indispensible for all those interested in films and film-making.
