Book Description
At last! A film book that is really useful! And fun! These enthusiasts’ lists, arranged by genre, director or actor, answer that most difficult of questions: what DVD should you rent for the night? Fancy a screwball comedy? We review all the classics. Not seen all the Herzog movies? Here’s the lowdown on the best. Desperate to see that Scarlett Johansson again? No problem. All movie life is here...

Product Description
Action, African greats, alcohol, Robert Aldrich, aliens, Woody Allen, Pedro Almodovar, Robert Altman, animated, anime, apocalypses, Argentina, art, Asia minor, avant garde… And that’s just A for you. A taste of this fabulously quirky and enjoyable book which is both a celebration of movies – and movie trivia – and a handy, entertaining guide to films that we know you will enjoy. It is fantastically functional. The lists are well conceived and easy to understand – mostly assembled by genre, actor, director, theme or country of origin – and the reviews are witty and informative. Oddly enough, most movie guides are not full of recommendations. But Movie Lists is, in spades, leaving readers in no doubt that the films reviewed are the business. Oh – and you don’t have to watch them all before you die. There is no premise of death in this book. You just need to get down to the local Blockbusters or flick your remote to Movies on Demand. Only the popcorn is not supplied.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to become a Film Connoisseur - in 397 easy steps!, 10 Mar 2009
By Film Lover (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The best "movie list" book I've ever come across. At the start of each list is an elegantly succinct introduction which brings you right up to speed with that particular director, actor or "genre", enabling you to feel a bit of an expert before you even read the choice of films... And then, in the lists themselves, this book really shows its class. Excellently chosen and superbly summarised, each one gives a balanced and intriguing overview of that particular area of film. Best of all, you can cross reference from (say) a particular director to a genre that they were famous for, to an actor they often worked with, and you'll find that each of those other categories has a list of its own. It's like an Aladdin's cave, with one chamber of treasures leading to another, letting you browse as casually or as avidly as you like. And with the help of whatever DVD club you belong to, I wouldn't be surprised if you turned into a film connoisseur. This is a delight from cover to cover, and I thoroughly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the cover, 2 Feb 2009
By A. Cargill (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found this book to be something of a mixed bag.

The chunky paperback format lends itself to being kept close by for easy reference and it certainly lives up to it's name. You are able to jump back and forth between any of the 397 lists on offer, finding movies that maybe you hadn't heard of or up to now considered.

But where the title falls down is in it presentation. It is fairly text-heavy with little in the way of imagery. It would have been nice to have seen some more stills from the films to break up each of the lists.

Overall not a bad book, more functional than essential coffee table book though.
