Product Description

Synopsis

The labor movement espoused social equality and honest labor through the formation of labor unions. Although groups such as the Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor, both of which represented skilled laborers, began to figure prominently in industry in the late 1800s, labor unions that represented unskilled workers did not gain influence until the early 1900s. By the 1930s, labor unions were becoming more accepted, thanks in part to the National Labor Relations Act, which gave workers the right to establish unions without interference from their employers. Crisply written and illustrated with compelling photographs and sidebars, "The Labor Movement" is a thorough look at the movement that has had a profound effect on how industry operates in the United States.

4.0 out of 5 stars Labor movement: Unionizing America 24 Dec 2010
By D. Maher - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I think this was a great gift for my husband, who is a third generation Local 7 Ironworker. He tries to explain what the union truly means to people, and they just don't get it. Even when he quotes the death rates on jobs when there was no union, people do not understand the guts and skill it takes to be any number of the union workers ( electrical, steelworkers, laborers). These men were treated like dirt and could barely make a living while America was built up around them. And thank God for every man, woman, picketer, politician, who helped push to get these men fare wages and benefits. We as a family are totally pro-union!!

Mrs. Deborah Maher, wife of a union Ironworker
and R.N without a union in my hospital... shame on them.
