Geraint Watkins is a Welshman whose musical career has included supporting
instrumental roles (predominately behind the piano) alongside the likes of such
interstellar luminaries as Paul McCartney and Van Morrison, to name but two.

This solo project is a bit of a charmer. Mr Watkins is clearly a very able writer
and the twelve songs in this collection playfully mash-up a wide range of styles
and influences but it quickly becomes apparent that he is American in his heart.

Opening track 'House On The Prairie' is a delightfully nostalgic invention which
affectionately doffs its hat to Randy Newman; 'Walking To Milwaukee' sounds a
tad like mid-eighties Boz Scaggs; 'Mosquito' shuffles along languidly on the back
of a slinky Latin rhythm and isn't afraid to have a quiet laugh at itself and the
bluesy 'All Around The World' is a model of economy, experience and innate musicality.

Solid as a rock. No frills. Pure class.

Recommended.

There is no doubt about the fact that Geraint Watkins is a talented man.
The list of artists he has played and recorded with is nothing short of astounding.
As with a lot of great sidemen, his own work can get a little patchy.
The musical content of Moustique strives for the same high standard as his previous releases, but, like GW's others, the songs themselves tend to be frustratingly weak, with many pedestrian lines of lyric repeated for seemingly no other reason than to fill vocal space, leaving the whole project feeling like it wasn't quite finished.
Sadly, the instrumentals don't have much point to them either.
I just listened to the album twice in a row (it's a pretty brief affair as well).
Where it works, it works nicely.
When it doesn't, it all sounds a bit too much like a band on a cruise ship.
I recently left a similar review of the new Chuck E Weiss album, Red Beans And Weiss.
Great tracks, flimsy songwriting.
Moustique is pleasant enough, I guess,, but I'm still waiting for the complete offering I know this artist is perfectly capable of delivering.

Very very disappointing album. I absolutely loved his previous album and have played it to death. What a disappointment to hear his latest offering, over-produced backing tracks veering far too much towards sentimentality rather than the French /Cajun spice and gritty realism of In a Bad Mood. This album however, just does not stack up, I could not find one track which made me want to play it again and was relieved when the fillers at the end had finished. Geraint Watkins is a great musician and chanteur however, he has been let down by the song selection and production on this CD.

disappointing!!...was recommended, if you liked "In a bad mood", this is a must?. I first saw Geriant playing with Bill Wymans' Rhythm Kings, and i bought "bad mood" on the strength of that. I enjoyed his "quirky" voice and the french flavour his music induced. I found songs on "Moustique" a little out of character with what I expected from the artist and felt as though they were just "fillers" to finish the C.D, Good Boy for example.

Very high quality songs, great playing and feel, for me it hangs together better than his first album. Highly recommended!
