Soothing 20 Dec 2002
By kit7635
Format:Audio CD
It's hard to resist the comforting warmth of this lyrical, calming and insidious music.

Oumou Sangare sings like a bird, her rich, sweet vocals as mellifluous as they are are intricate and dynamic. I especially like how she lets some phrases melt away into the ether, and wards off stodginess with piercing 3-part choruses in just the right places.

The backing music is understated but full of swinging uptempo rhythmn. Lilting bass riffs and the repetition and subtle embellishment of compact guitar figures are the foundation, with some sonorous violin weaved in for extra texture and percussive support by little shakers, scrapers and whatnot rather than booming drums.

The production sound is spacious and unprocessed, which adds to the easy, free-breathing feel.

"Moussolou" may not be a masterpiece, but writing this review at Christmas it's just the thing to melt away the festive stress blues.
