Obscure Delight,
By The Soft Machine Operator (COVENTRY, WARWICKSHIRE United Kingdom) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Mouseproof (Audio CD)
An obscure album that was barely available when it was first issued. It's mainly a showcase of multi-instrumentalist G.F Fitzgerald, and varies wildy from track to track, with snippets of prog rock, jazz and electronics to ensure things never get dull. Judy Dyble from Fairport makes an appearance on a few tracks.
The opening track is a fairly typical 1960s acoustic pop track, but stick with it for an eclectic ride!

I really do like this album.,

That "car crash on acid" comment--ignore that. Very much in the vein of Kevin Ayers and early Gong, as the previous poster stated. A breezy sort of summertime album. It's actually really good...I listen to it whenever I pull out my old late-60's/early-70's Vertigo stuff.

great unheard stuff from those good old days of the British underground,

it's getting harder and harder to find great unheard stuff from those good old days of the British underground, but here we have one. the liner notes quote an early review comparing this music to "a car crash on acid...." Nice thought, but I don't really hear that. I do hear the eclecticism, if not the fire, of the early genre-bending way-out Kevin Ayers and Gong albums, but more reigned in. What's lacking in the fire department is made up for by the post office--I'm talking about the smooth delivery. cheers for dusting this off and bringing this out!
