Book Description

2 May 2013
The gods have created a world - they've built mountains, a sea and a sky – and now their days are filled with long naps in the clouds (and tea and cake). That's until Harry, Sue and little Ben begin to fill the gaps of the world: with a mousy thing, a chirpy thing and a twisty legless thing. As the children's ideas take shape, the power of their visions proves to be greater than they, or the gods, could ever have imagined.

Product Description

"Almond/McKean is a double act that's hard to beat. The third of their graphic novel collaborations is the most beautiful, but perhaps also the most unsettling. The writing is powerfully emotional; the pictures, brilliantly arresting." (Guardian)" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars bought for just 9 year old. 15 Sep 2013

My granddaughter loved this book; used for bedtime reading by Mum, couldn't wait for the next session, and so sneaked off and finished reading it herself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unconventional and charming 22 Dec 2013
By Ryann McDonald - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Great art and unique story. Make sure to look into the author and subject of this one because it isn't for the average reader/family. I loved it a lot and am giving it 4 stars because there were moments when I was uncertain of the motivations.
Must read if you are open to unconventional childhood themes.
4.0 out of 5 stars Almond never disappoints 13 Oct 2013

David Almond has yet to disappoint me. He is always writing new books that set my little brain to whirring. This new story is no exception. A thoughtful little tale.
5.0 out of 5 stars A cool book for mischevious kids 24 Jun 2013
By motheranddaughterduo - Published on Amazon.com
I like how the book is written; it is cool. The kids make things that they are not supposed to. That is just like me! I like how the gods are thoughtful, too. The pictures look like they are cut out and there are lots of details. The empty spaces are interesting. (This review actually written by my 7 year old daughter who has sent me online to reserve other books like this at the library.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept 22 May 2013
By Dena - Published on Amazon.com
This is an interesting and contemporary modern fable in the form of an early reader book. The wolf eating the kids was a bit predictable, but I generally liked the story in spite of that. The illustrations were breathtaking and gave the story a fantastical atmosphere.

I enjoyed the moral of the story, but I would be a little concerned about reading this to very young readers since the part with the wolf is kind of disturbing. The reading level is for children 7 and up, which seems appropriate considering the subject matter.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of Paper 20 Dec 2013
By Laura Marciniak - Published on Amazon.com
The emperor has no clothes. Frankly, I don't understand all the fuss. The story wasn't interesting. Little children might enjoy it but the vocabulary is too difficult for them. Older children - I can't imagine them putting up with having their intelligence insulted in this way.
