Biography

For the first time in his life, Brother Ali has been enjoying some day-to-day stability. Gone is the turbulent marriage to his first wife, homelessness, and the associated drama—all of which Ali openly documented on his last LP, The Undisputed Truth.

His new album, Us, is a progression that will establish Brother Ali as one of Hip Hop’s most enduring figures. While ... Read more in Amazon's Brother Ali Store

Product Description

Product Description

On his fourth full length album, Ali teams up with seasoned producer Jake One to tell a very different American story. Inspired by an eye-opening first trip to Mecca, the 2011 uprisings in the Middle East, and the worldwide Occupy movements, the album represents a brave and scathing, yet honest, critique of America and its many flaws while simultaneously presenting a hopeful outlook of its possibilities. "One of the best MCs in the game" - The Metro. Features & reviews in Clash, NME, Stool Pigeon, Vice, Mojo, Q, Loud & Quiet, The Guardian, The Quietus, Line of Best Fit and more. Special splatter style multi-colour double vinyl with huge fold out US flag poster with lyrics and free digital download card.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consistently Enjoyable 3 Oct 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've managed to listen to this album several times since I received it on pre-order. I always try to listen at least a few times to an album in full and in the original track order before I jump to conclusions as some sounds and albums can be slow burners. Brother Ali has crafted another quality album which I find to be most similar to 'The Undisputed Truth' in terms of narrative, subject matter covered and quality.

My highlights would be:
The introspective 'Stop The Press' or the wonderfully balanced 'All You Need' which highlights the effects of parental abuse from generation to generation in a way only Brother Ali can.
Political/social commentary in 'Mourning in America', 'Only Life I Know' and 'Work Everyday'.
Relationship and spiritualism in 'My Beloved'.

The only track I dislike is 'Need a Knot' as I don't think the beats and chorus work well in my opinion. Some other reviews I've read have stated that this album lacks some of the really high points of previous albums, which is true to a certain degree. However, in my opinion their is a higher average quality overall to the album which makes up for this.

Dear Amazon,

Thank you for allowing me to purchase the album from the big brother Ali. But why are you selling clean copies without clearly saying that the album is clean. I'm still going to play it at high volumes, but I would love to hear the album as it was recorded.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece added to a powerful legacy 19 Sep 2012
By T.A. Woodstock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If you're looking this up, I'm assuming that you already know who Brother Ali is and his style for music. I won't break this down track-by-track; I really believe that that wouldn't do this album justice. Maybe I'll edit this later and actually do a breakdown.

For those familiar with Brother Ali, you're aware that this is an album packed with a wealth of opinions. Not political or anything, for the opinions presented in this album can be understood by any person, not a label of Democrat of Republican. You know that voice that a lot of use wish would straight-up say what's going on in this mess of a world we live in? That voice is here, and it's called Brother Ali. It's not all gloomy...he presents it in a way that shows hope for the future through love. Short of describing it as the anger/hunger/love that Brother Ali is known for, I don't know the words to describe it.

Two tracks on this album really stand out to me and are the most powerful. They are as follows:

12 - All You Need --- A powerful song from Brother Ali to Faheem describing things that went on in his infant stage that we the listeners were never aware of. This song, in my opinion, is the most heartfelt song on the album. This song has the making of Brother Ali reaching a point of calm after the turmoil he's been through, and is singing his lullaby to Faheem. "Faheem we can see the thrown from here | I may never sit there, but brother you're the heir" Imagine the raw emotion from "Rain Water," "Here," "Babygirl," etc. This song is a very powerful song, and the chorus, in my opinion, helps it.

13 - My Beloved --- This is Brother Ali saying his thanks to the caring souls that have helped him out along his journey of healing himself and figuring things out. There is a lot of good advice in this song...a powerful song.

I'll keep updating this as I find time and the words. If you get a chance to see Brother Ali on tour, DO IT. The emotion of the show is indescribable. Any Brother Ali fan will love this album and his tour, and newcomers will also be quickly hooked.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't get me wrong, 4 is still a strong rating 19 Sep 2012
By Randy C Treibel - Published on Amazon.com

This is a great CD. Is it his best work? No, but it is clearly a quality effort and a 4/5 is no injustice. Brother Ali is not holding back on his lyrics like you'd expect with some decent beats. My only small complain with this album is that there aren't any songs that are standout. All are good, none are bad, but none are amazing.
