Book Description

25 Aug 2011

When Jose Mourinho realised as a teenager that he was never going to be a great player, he decided he was going to become the best coach in the world. At 47, many would say that he's done that - probably including Mourinho, who has called himself the Special One. From translator and assistant to Sir Bobby Robson at Barcelona, to Champions League-winning manager at Porto and on to turning Chelsea into one of Europe's most successful clubs, followed by Champions League victory at Inter-Milan, and now ready to deliver the same at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho's ascent has been rapid.

Backed by Abramovich's billions, Mourinho weeded out those not fully committed to his methods, made several astute signings and improved the performances of many Chelsea stars. The result: in his first season in 2005, Chelsea won both the Premier League title and the Carling Cup, followed by another title the following season. Mourinho then left for Inter-Milan where he delivered a treble in his second season in charge, and is now tasked with bringing Real Madrid's 'Galacticos' the silverware they crave.

Patrick Barclay, award-winning football correspondent of The Times, has written an intelligent, analytical and concise account of the life and psychology of Mourinho. To develop this portrait, he has interviewed those who have worked closely with him, such as Sir Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal, as well as some of the players who provide a revealing insight into what has made Mourinho the most successful manager in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Special One 24 Mar 2013
By John
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The story of Jose Mourinho's rise to fame is real Roy of the Rovers stuff. Never realising he was going to make it as a player, he got himself on the coaching ladder, acted as translator and assistant to Sir Bobby Robson at Barcelona, then went alone, and proved he had the midas touch. Patrick Barclay's book is a superb biography of the 'Special One.'

5.0 out of 5 stars A Genius! 7 April 2012
By F. Poli VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Unlike some of the top Football Coaches today like Alex Ferguson, Bobby Robson, Fabio Capello, Giovanni Trapattoni, & Carlo Ancelotti Mourinho does not have a past as a professional football player. Having studied languages and psychology he arrived in the football world as an interpreter for Sir Bobby Robson. Mourinho is a great observer, strategist & tactician. Once a player turns professional he already knows the basics of playing football, the rest is down to fitness, psychology & team work. Mourinho is a master at this and this book shows you how.
Good to see that behind this great man is a solid family, where his wife plays a key role.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read 23 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
This newly-released book (25 Aug 2011) is an update on an earlier book by Barclay titled Mourinho: Anatomy Of A Winner published in 2005. The story is updated to Jose's time in Italy and his first season in Spain from 2010-2011. Written in true journalistic style you get the anecdotes and the quotes. Do not expect a full biography. This is a book for Mourinho's fans and for those curious as to his management style and his methods to achieve success in the highly stressful life of a top football manager.

excellent i can now understand what it is all about, having been in my earlier life a PE teacher who many time had to inspire young people to believe in themselves, i feel that what i did was not so far away from Mr Mourinho. i was fascinated by his approach to detail and the psychology he used, wish i was 40 years younger again

5.0 out of 5 stars Mourinho Further Anatomy of a winner 11 April 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well what can I say about the Special One I have read about all the books featuring him and find them very enlightening. He has had quite a rough journey to get to where he is today and has had to deal with quite a few unsavoury characters along the way. Can't wait for the next book.

Well worth a read if your remotely interested in Jose.
Still can't work out if his antics are deliberate to take the pressure from his team, or he is just a big show off!
Either way he's good fun and I look forward to him back in the Premiership.
