Product Description

Product Description

There are 439 summits in England and Wales, which reach the height of 2000ft (generally accepted as the height at which a hill becomes a mountain), and it is the ambition of many walkers to climb them all. There are 251 such summits in England, and this book describes how to ascend them all in a series of 58 walks. The summits that achieve this magical height (and rise above their surroundings by at least 50ft) are described by region, from the Lake District to the Chevoits, on to the North Pennines and Yorkshire Dales, and finally to the Peak District and Dartmoor. They include some of England's most famous peaks, such as Blencathra, Great Gable and Coniston Old Man in the Lakes, and Kinder Scout in the Peak District. But others have no name on the OS maps and await discovery by the ardent 'peak-bagger'. All these summits take the walker into some of the most beautiful hill-walking areas of England and provide a lifetime's challenge and enjoyment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great mountain walking guide, 6 Mar 2003

This review is from: The Mountains of England and Wales: Vol 2 - England (A Cicerone guide): England v. 2 (Paperback)
I bought this superb walking book in the early nineties and have had many years of use out of it. The book uses the "Wainwright" style in that it is illustrated with beautiful hand drawn pen and ink pictures and maps and does not use photographs at all. The primary goal of this offering by John and Ann Nuttall is to offer routes for walkers to climb all the 251 peaks above 2000 feet in England and Wales, this is achieved in a series of 58 walks which are described in a personal way by the Nutall's as they narrate and recall their own experiences of doing the walks and add items of historical and local interest which show a depth of research and knowledge not usually seen in many walking guides. All the routes are circular and include details of car parking, maps required, distance and the total ascent in feet.

For anybody who takes mountain walking in England seriously this is a "must have" book. It's really worth four and a half stars.
