Strange mythological-type creatures inhabit the new dystopian world that 17-yr old Sophie finds herself in when she wakes up one morning only to discover that almost everyone else in the world has disappeared. (Actually, that happened in the first book in this series called Sea of Dreams). In Mountain of Dreams, Sophie travels from California to Washington DC in order to see what's there. Along the way, she is accompanied by Kara and the new pixie friends (see book 1). Good (Sophie) encounters evil throughout the trip and once she's in DC.
The story is well plotted and fast paced. The dialogue rings true. And mystery and intrigue abound. If you like dystopian stories without graphic violence and gore, you'll enjoy this book.
I look forward to book three in the series (if there is one) and hope to see it set back on the west coast with continued reappearance of the Burned Man (book 1.) He is a GREAT character because I still can't understand what he wants and why he feels the need to kill Sophie.
