I bought this book mainly for the very detailed description of how weather system works, which is missing in 'The Complete Guide to Climbing & Mountaineering' by Peter Hill. In this book, I found, other sections like rock climbing technique, ice climbing, how to spot crevasses, winter weather, avalanches etc are presented with more in-depth analysis and more comprehensive explanation. It also covers ski mountaineering skills as well as essential trekking and climbing skills. This is probably the most detailed and complete guidebook available, while Peter Hill's version is more like an introduction book. I would recommend this book not only to beginners but also to advanced climbers.

I was bought this book as a birthday present, and as a fairly experienced climber I expected it to be basic at best as most texts that claim to be comprehensive, but as I began to read it I realised it does actually cover a large amount of information over a broad range of activities.
If I had to have one book with me it would be this.
It's an ideal gift for anyone trying to get into climbing, walking, or mountaineering, or anyone already in the area just wanting to learn something new or enhance their existing knowledge.

A* book a definite recommendation for personal and group work.

I bought this book in 2009 from a local bookshop after seeing the great color pictures and drawings and its logical approach. I was already an experienced climber and mountaineer but this book really opened my mind: the book doesn't only describe best practices and alternative ways to handle tasks of rope-work but also provides the scientific explanations to why it is recommended. It gives examples of good up-to-date tools and gear, includes tips and tricks from various successful mountaineers and mountain guides, whilst keeping you interested in the subject throughout.

I was so impressed with the book, I booked an alpine mountaineering course with the author, who happens to be a very educated and patient person. He is obviously very skilled in teaching.

I recommend it to all mountaineers, climbers, and hill walkers; and also prefer it over the other well known book: "Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills".

This is possibly the best mountaineering book out there. The author shows that he has an excellent subject knowledge and the qoutes add homour to the book. I think that you need to have a small amount of knowledge yourself before reading this book and is probably not aimed at a first timer but an semi experienced person wanting to improve. Excellent buy it now.

Not to detract from MFOTH by the Mountaineers which as not be updated in 15 yrs but this may be it's replacement. THe book is full of technical and photgraphic illustrations and good data. The book is a great jumping off point for almost all climbing activities including ski mountaineering. Look to rder it from the UK through the book depository, You will get it in two weeks or less and save money to by gear with.

Climb On!
