ONE OF THE BETTER WESTERNS, 28 Dec 2005
This review is from: Mountain Men [DVD] [1980] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Heston and Brian Keith are well cast in this movie, it is set in a time of change in the early west and the scenery and acting superb, alongwith a well directed script makes this a must for early historians of these time long gone, gives you an insight to a way of life in the dawn of America, two older mountain men who are still chasing a way of life which is passing them by and fighting to hold on to it, not one bad performance by any of the cast. a real classic.

Undemanding at best, 23 Aug 2007
One of the last major batch of Westerns trying to cash in on the expected success of Heaven's Gate (Eagle's Wing, Cattle Annie and Little Britches, Tom Horn, The Long Riders, Barbarosa, The Legend of the Lone Ranger), The Mountain Men has a serviceable enough script for a throwaway action movie but is hampered by some clumsily abrupt editing and director Richard Lang's rather severe limitations as an action director. Little registers and Charlton Heston and Brian Keith's ageing trappers stalked by Stephen Macht's vengeful Indian never particularly convince as engaging characters or as symbols for a dying way of life thanks in part to an overly predictable script from Fraser Clarke Heston. Victor Jory offers an amusing cameo in his last film as a senile chief and John Glover briefly livens things up as a tenderfoot who rides along for a spell, but Jeremiah Johnson this ain't. Sony's Region 2 DVD offers no extra features - it doesn't even include a proper menu - but, unlike the fullframe Region 1 NTSC DVD, at least boasts a good 2.35:1 widescreen transfer.

THE MOUNTAIN MEN (1980), 27 Dec 2008
This review is from: Mountain Men [DVD] [1980] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Bill Tyler (Charlton Heston) and Henry Frapp (Brian Keith) are fur trappers in the North American Wilderness. They out run hostile indians. Their companion Running Moon (Victoria Racimo) is a chief's runaway Squaw. First Tyler asks her to leave, but she has no where to go. The black foot want her back, but the crow help Tyler and Frapp. They try to put as much distance as possible between Running Moon and themselves.
Then the Chief black foot captures her and tells Tyler, she is dead. They are attacked by indians many times and the battles are very fast and furious. Then Tyler finds out that Running Moon is alive and her wants to go and get her. Frapp goes along to help him.
The movie starts in widescreen, but sadly the format is adjusted to TV screen and one looses all the side scenes and the beauty of watching the movie in widescreen. The photography is excellent and director Richard Lang keeps the actions and story moving well. Will Tyler get his woman? Will Frapp be able to help him? OR will the indians succeed in killing them both?
Watch and ENJOY. (ENGLAND. UK)
