This book held promise, even in a slightly over-supplied market. It is, however, not nearly as good as its write-up would have one believe. There are a few imaginative and technically competent photographs, but they are, I fear, a minority.
Although there is geographical variety across the UK, there are too many repetitive thematic shots- cloudy/misty landscapes, receding horizons and so on. That is not the main problem, however. Too many of the shots are technically under par- one or two are actually out of focus. The author admits that one shot is not perfect [it includes a figure, giving odd proportions to the scene]: one wonders why then it was included.
Several shots are spoiled by inaccurate exposure [although, of course, that could be a reproduction issue].
But my main gripe with this collection is that there are too many shots of subjects treated far more competently in other works, or simply dull and boring perspectives of over-photographed scenes. There is a lack of imagination and flair that make the book not magical at all.
All in all, this is a pedestrian book with too many mediocre images: there are far better books on the market.
