These are the mountains of Britain in all their majesty and moods, beautifully photographed, with an informative commentary on each picture. (Western Daily Press )

Breath-taking images images of some of the most iconic British hills are featured in this truly inspirational book. Flicking through the pages makes you appreciate the beauty and splendour of the landscapes captured through the lens of Van Greaves, one of the country's most respected mountain photographers. (Westmorland Gazette )

British peaks are just as moving as the mighty Himalayas. So says mountain photographer Van Greaves who has reached new heights with his latest collection of images. After taking in his mesmerising shots of Snowdonia and the Scottish Highlands we certainly can't argue. (Wanderlust )

Each photograph is accompanied by chatty and fascinating captions explaining the light and weather conditions, hardship endured or patience required to gain the desired effect. (Cumbria Life )

Serious mountain connoisseurs will want to cover up the captions and play 'guess the peak'; again and again I thought I was seeing an image of the Alps or the Himalayas only to find it was the Black Cuillin of Skye or the Cumbrian Fells: a reminder of how wild the British ranges can be. (BBC Countryfile )

A magical book that displays the wonderful British countryside at its most dramatic. (Worcestershire Life )

These Poucheresque photographs will transport you into the Peaks. (TGO: The Great Outdoors )

Disappointing 11 July 2009
By AHW Rea
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book held promise, even in a slightly over-supplied market. It is, however, not nearly as good as its write-up would have one believe. There are a few imaginative and technically competent photographs, but they are, I fear, a minority.

Although there is geographical variety across the UK, there are too many repetitive thematic shots- cloudy/misty landscapes, receding horizons and so on. That is not the main problem, however. Too many of the shots are technically under par- one or two are actually out of focus. The author admits that one shot is not perfect [it includes a figure, giving odd proportions to the scene]: one wonders why then it was included.

Several shots are spoiled by inaccurate exposure [although, of course, that could be a reproduction issue].

But my main gripe with this collection is that there are too many shots of subjects treated far more competently in other works, or simply dull and boring perspectives of over-photographed scenes. There is a lack of imagination and flair that make the book not magical at all.

All in all, this is a pedestrian book with too many mediocre images: there are far better books on the market.

I gave this as a gift to my son in law who is an accomplished hill walker. He said the photograhy was technically superb and the shots were unique. He was delighted to find that the subject matter encompassed a wide variety of mountain ranges throughout the uk. Altogether a breathtakingly beautiful book and in a league on its own with others in the same genre.
