Bought Mountain Biking the Manual after reading a review on the Dirt Magazine website, which said "If you ride bikes then you need to read this book." As a mountain biking skills book it certainly covers all the bases with a brief history of the various MTB disciplines & equipment, training & fitness, nutrition and psychology. The performance section includes basics like the wheelie to key techniques on how to handle flat corners, berms, roots and switchbacks. Flying through the air is included in the advanced performance section, with tips and stunning photos of big gaps, step downs, whips, flips and 360s.
The photography in the book is truly inspirational, with some amazing shots from events like Red Bull's Rampage. But what I've really enjoyed most about the book so far is Chris Ball's writing, along with the insight he got from some legends of the sport. I reckon this is a book I'll be constantly referring back to time and time again.
The book starts off with an explanation of the different types of mountain biking and moves all the way through to getting big air, preparing for competitions and doing long treks by bike. This was a lot of ground to cover and I think this made the book skimp on detail. Most topics are given 2-3 pages including the great full page image. This technique works ok for most topics, but 2-3 pages each on manualing, switchbacks, drop-offs etc did not seem enough. In the author's Dirt School DVD they each get a good ten minutes and I was hoping for more insights along the lines of the video.
I like Chris Ball, and would recommend his Dirtschool DVD - The Mountain Bike Technique Film DVD above this book if you actually want to learn skills. Also the Mastering Mountain Bike Skills book by Brian Lopes is much more practical, and has better sequence diagrams of how to perform skills on your bike. This book does cover how to do large gap jumps, 360s and other types of big air - but I wouldn't have thought they were best learned from a book....
So in summary this is a nicely put together book which is good to dip in and out of, and it will make you want to get out on your bike. But if you want to boost your rad skills I'd look elsewhere.
There's something about this book where every time I read a bit I'm left feeling disappointed and short changed. I wanted a book that had some depth to the technique covered and this book doesn't have it in my view, more tasters. I suppose it's a little bit like the difference between a Haynes car manual versus a factory workshop manual - this is the Haynes. I already know quite a bit of technique and maybe that's where the problem lies. If you don't know technique then perhaps this would be a good introduction. With a background in psychology the section on psychology I felt was just poor. I also got the feeling that it is a bit biased towards downhill rather than cross-country riding.
I've been surfing for a while and bought Surfing The Manual from the Wavefinder. The book really helped my surfing, so as an avid mountain biker as well I figured that the newly released Mountain Biking The Manual would help my riding! It's got some sweet pictures (such as the Red Bull Rampage ones that the reviewer above mentioned) and great tips from Chris Ball that helped me do loads of new stuff such as my first 360!
I'm stoked I bought this book and I really think it will get my riding so much better!
