Review

"Lennard Zinn is a veritable cycling Einstein, and as a naturally gifted teacher he has the unique ability to explain even the most difficult mechanical task." --Davis Phinney, Olympic medalist, U.S. Pro champion, and Tour de France stage winner

"Understanding the mechanics of your bike, knowing how to adjust it to suit your riding style, and knowing how to keep it running smoothly are essential to your mountain biking performance. Nobody teaches these skills better than the famous artiste "Leonardo da Zinnski." --Ned Overend, World and National Mountain Bike Champion

"Lennard Zinn is an institution in the bicycle world--a legend. Legions of cyclists have learned to repair bikes from him, ridden bicycles he's built, or used his advice as guidance on how to better enjoy the world on two wheels." -- Bicycle Times magazine

"Regardless of your skill level, this book is a great manual to have on hand. In its 5th edition, Zinn adds to an already impressive knowledge base, keeping things up-to-date with current innovations and tools. It doesn't spend all of its 464 pages going over installation and maintenance procedures; there are also a lot of useful tips and tricks." -- Adventure Cycling magazine

"Zinn is very good at taking you incrementally through the learning process--whether you are a beginner or expert mechanic." -- Out There Monthly magazine

"This book almost rates along with those 'missing manuals' that exist for computer software. When was the last time the manual that came with your bike bore any relation to it? Exactly. You could barely buy a decent tire for the price of this book and that should be justification enough." -- TheWashingMachinePost.net

"Simple to reaad and follow, the illustrated, large-format paperback manual features everything from replacing a flat to repairing components. It's a great addition to any new biker's library but offers invaluable advice for experts, too." -- Sports Guide magazine

"This 5th edition contains detai --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

He describes and rates every repair and counsels the novice bike mechanic how to decide whether or not to take the bike to a bike shop for professional attention. Extensive line drawings show how parts fit together and illustrate the tools required for every type of bike. Also explained are emergency on-trail repair tricks. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

A great book on general mountian bike maintenance, Zenn's motorbike influence shining through... The savings you make from not having to go to the repair shop for services every few months are but a bonus compared to the confidence you will get from knowing how to properly service and maintain your bike! Includes handy tips on getting home when things break!

Since buying this book I've changed bottom brackets, chainsets, installed chains, adjusted gears and brakes... I'm a mechanical novice and it's great understanding what makes your bike run smoothly. The illustrations DO work very well, especially where components are exploded. (The black & white photos used in many other manuals just don't work with the complexity of MTB components- you can't see any detail.) Top marks for the drawings and the excellent text. And it's fun. Buy it!

As a relative beginner to the murky world of fixing my bike, this particular book seemed to be the answer to my prayers - as long as it could deliver the goods...

Let's not beat about the bush - the book does what it claims - and does it very well indeed. Zinn's writing style is relaxed and non-threatening - and yet highly informative and clear.

I'm finding that, as I use the book, I'm not just learning how to do things - but I'm learning why. The book is very good on helping you see the links and connections and I'm finding that this is increasing my enjoyment of my bike (a £350 GT hardtail - so nothing extravagant).

The illustrations - though basic, are very clear and easy to follow - again full marks.

All in all, I'm really pleased with this book - if I could only get my riding up to the same standard!

Exhaustive, but dated look
This fat tome has everything required for the serious home cycle mechanic. But the diagrams are quite (deliberately) 'sketchy' so can be difficult to decode sometimes.
