I saw the Moulettes live at a festival - a terrific gig full of superb musicianship and an obvious chemisty between the band. Having then bought the album I wasn't disappointed - personally, I love this sort of thing. How to describe it is the problem as there are so many influences - it's core sound is a sort of dark gypsy swing jazz/folk and if you think that's a bit ambiguous, then there's also classical elements, bewitching harmonies and tales of the night. One of the tracks - Requiem has a moment which reminded me of the sort of simple three note techno passages you'd hear in a club before a track kicks off again - except this time played on a bassoon! This track is a standout for me, with hints of Holst's "Mars" in it's opening passages and some vocal interplay between the two lead female vocals which make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Other personal favourites - Talisman goes from a sort of mid paced 30s jazz(ish)and explodes into pagan irish jig in a beat and back again, while Going a Gathering seems to fuse a rockabilly strut with swing. The whole album is played with impeccable timing and skill on cello, violin, bassoon, drums, guitar and more. There are maybe two tracks on here I'm less keen on but at least five or six excellent songs - I think that's a good return if you're getting something this quirky and unusual.

This isn't an album to stick on quietly in the background on your kitchen stereo - too challenging and nuanced for that. Give it some volume and some time to get the best of it. I suspect it's not for everyone - but if you like the sound of a prog/folk/swing/jazz/classical fusion then this is about as good as it gets - check them out on You Tube or even better, see them live.

You'll see that the packaging for this CD has been created with care and unbounded creativity, and the same can be said of the music. You might call it contemporary folk, but really this has none of the leaden seriousness that genre. The album rattles along with a swinging, dark humour. There are finely crafted female vocal harmonies, skittling changes of tempo, and a rich blend of instruments amongst which the cello and bassoon feature prominently. There are slow, bewitching interludes. This is confident, inventive, quirky stuff.

I first saw the Moulettes busking in Malta, the eerie sound that echoed back at me from the tall buildings, stopped me in my tracks, after a couple of songs, I was hooked and bought the CD. Not quite folk, not quite Irish, not quite like anything I had heard before.

With no preconceptions, or expectations, I listened to this album four or five times in a row, as a debut it is a highly polished and professional performance. An eclectic fusion of sounds that assults the senses, I could hear so many different influences and countries, a truely amazing and talented group, buy it and you won't be disappointed.
