About the Author
Nick Brooks studied Fine Art and Design at Middlesex University. If you are someone who has a basic knowledge of casting and mould making this book is a great investment. Nick Brooks has done a brilliant job on this book. He has presented it in a clear and easy to understand style which leaves you feeling as if you have really learned something while reading about both, the origins and the current art, of mould making. The book covers plaster, silicon, vinyln, clay, fibre glass and many more materials. The fantastic photos and step by step process and method guilds can really leave you with abilites that you can apply easy and with confidence (after a little practice of course). It really is a must!

this book was published in 05 but was writtten in early 90s i guess. the chapter mouldmaking and casting principles looks as if taken from the engineers' manual(i used to study it), a sculpurer has more irregular pieces to work on and perhaps even more detail preserving ambitions i recon which brings me to some materials the author suggests. i would not use the 19th century way of mouldmaking unless out of curiosity. the chapter about life casting is misleading, i don't mean to be harsh but i wasted so much material following his suggestions until i found "for dummies"-way on the internet.experience will correct you best. chapters about silicon and casting techniques i did appreciate and found useful, though. as i have already hinted the book seems "out of date" a little more current material is mentioned at the end of the book by short notes. if only he focused on them more than the older techniques. however i'd still buy it.
