Review

A solid introduction to, and a survey of, the subject it covers --Art Book Review

I defy you to read this book and not learn from it ... Part of the impressive 'Glass Handbook' series, the book follows the pleasing formula of presenting well-illustrated case studies from established and emerging makers alongside a raft of essential, practical, hands-on information ... An invaluable resource for glass makers --Glass Networks

Product Description

Nearly all glass makers (unless they are blowing glass) need moulds which can go in the kiln, as part of the process of creating their work. Currently glass students and makers get their expertise and recipes from lots of different sources, picking out the relevant bits and pieces which they need from other glass and ceramic books. This book aims to introduce all the mould-making techniques for casting glass, with detailed information on materials, recipes for mould mixes, methods and applications. It helps the student to learn which methods are appropriate for different types of work, and covers all the basics of how to make your mould. It also includes practical information on sourcing, storing, using and recycling materials, and how to develop your own recipes and methods for particular projects. It also covers where to start with writing programmes for kiln firings including annealing and cooling. It also contains images from well-known artists working in cast glass throughout.

This book is fantastic, absolutely essential reading for anyone interested in kiln casting.
The information on mould mixes alone makes it worth the price. Angela Thwaites is a star,
thank you for this great read, I found it very helpful.

One of the best. 28 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent and accesible book on mould making for work with glass. Casting with glass is at last becoming less of a mystery and more of a less complex and acheivable discipline for newcomers to kiln work with glass. I wish this book had been available a ten years ago!

A new book about an important contemporary art form which sets out the author's views and not inconsiderable experiences. A great resource in that respect. Not really an introductory or teaching book to the area. It needs to be borne in mind that the book presents the author's (undoubtedly well based) view of certain issues - unfortunately presenting as fact but in reality actually the author's opinion and should be subject to further discussion. One could well take issue with some of the definitions, assumed facts and underlying assumptions as a basis for further discussion or exploration. A well versed reader will easily identify those aspects - a novice may well be misled into accepting them at face value. In summary - great value and a valuable book in this area.
