I have been a Motown fan for 36 years. Heard it through the Grapevine was the first single I ever bought. I still listen to Motown, it still has the magic. Every song on this CD is a sing along, dance along and/or a tearjearker. The Motown magic that put them ahead of the rest, it's in every song. The CD is, all 3 discs, full of great songs. It's one of my most frequently played CD's. And if you think you are not a fan, I challenge you to listen, I'm certain you will find many songs that you will like and you'll become part of the Motown groove. I could add more Motown classics perhaps, but I would not delete a single track from what I consider to be a perfect CD.

This triple CD contains 81 tracks from the vaults of Motown, all except the opening track (Money that’s what I want) recorded in the sixties, generally regarded as Motown’s best period. British fans are often surprised when they first discover that Motown released their first single in 1959. It took almost five years before the British public embraced the sound of Motown.
So this British compilation includes only a few tracks from the early years and the ones chosen are sometimes familiar to Brits via cover versions or re-releases. Personally, I would have liked better representation of these early years, but the tracks chosen are Money that’s what I want, Shop around, Please Mr Postman, Do you love me, Beechwood 4-5789, Stubborn kind of fellow, Fingertips, Heatwave, How sweet it is, The way you do the things you do, Baby I need your loving and Needle in a haystack – every one a classic. There are many great songs from this period that were omitted, but if you are particularly interested in this period of Motown history, you must look for an American compilation or (as I did) buy compilations of the individual artists.
Motown became successful in Britain in 1964 when Baby love (Supremes) and My guy (Mary Wells) became huge hits. After that, there was no stopping the seemingly endless stream of hits, although a look at the singles charts will show that Motown were much more successful in America than in Britain at the time. The remainder of the sixties is strongly represented, with plenty of tracks from Marvin Gaye (solo and duets), Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops, Junior Walker and the all-stars, the Isley brothers, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and Gladys Knight and the pips.

Having listened to Motown growing up, it's a pleasure to finally have a CD that brings so many good tracks together. The variety of artists and songs makes it an album to be listened to at any time. There are classics from Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder as well as thoses tracks you've heard and loved but never really knew who they were by. The CD gives a novice a wonderful chance to get in to the music of Tamla Motown, so it's a must for any real music fan. The sounds of Detroit are forever impressed on the music scene and this CD helps to capture that.

what an album! i listen to this everyday. absolutely fantastic!
best tunes are the ones i've recently discovered. i play 'behind a painted smile' by the isley bros so much, i fear the CD will melt!! it is a phenomenal tune.
gladys knight and the pips' version of 'heard it through the grapevine' is totally different from marvin gaye's version but it is sensational.
of course, 'you keep me hangin' on', 'i was made to love her' and others are brilliant but this is a one hell of a CD.

Motown is unbelievable. There are only a handful of record labels which have shaped the history of modern music, and Motown stands at the very top. There are some amazing tracks on this collection, indeed, many are amongst the most covered tracks in the history of modern music. The range of artists is also incredible: Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson (one of the best singer-songwriters of all time), the Supremes, the list goes on and on and on. This is one of the best collections going, across any genre.

I am 18 and my friends would laugh at me for listening to this music but who cares I love this music it is irresistible and some of the songs are just classics which today's artists can only dream about doing.
There collection starts of in 1959 with the first motown single money {that's what I want} by barret strong and then travels through the 60's with some of the greatest songs ever from the likes of Marvin gaye, Supremes, the temptations, smoky Robinson and the miracles, isley brothers, four tops and many more.
I love rock but I believe this is the best collection of songs you will ever come across.

Everybody knows that the Motown label churned out some of the best music in the 60s, and catapulted singers such as Marvin Gaye, The Jackons, Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson to international super-stardom and rightly so.
This 3CD set catalogues what is arguably teh finest period in modern music. Essential is not a strong enough word to recommend this package.
It will last you a lifetime. Your kids and your grandkids will love it, as will theirs. Timeless.

Everyone should experience the magic of motown. I can honestly say that anyone with the slightest incling as to what music should sound like would not regret buying this cd, which is a steal at the price. An absolute gem!!
