Product Description

A luscious island paradise might seem suitable for a relaxing holiday, but it also makes an ideal venue for off-road racing. The follow-up to MotorStorm trades the desert for golden beaches and verdant jungles that are as dangerous as they are beautiful.

The basic setup of Motor Storm - Pacific Rift is familiar: 16 different drivers behind the wheel of vehicles ranging from monster trucks to speedy motorbikes. Race courses are only loosely laid out, and it’s completely up to you to pick the best route for your vehicle.

Take the easy route, and you risk getting shunted off a cliff by your rivals. Or you could risk everything on a more dangerous shortcut. Some may be disappointed that this isn’t much more than a change of scenery from the first game, but when it looks this good, that’s not much of a problem.

  • Paradise found: The game offers some of the best graphics on the PS3 with amazing attention to detail, huge courses, and a fully destructible environment.
  • Track listing: 16 new courses (twice as many as the original) range from beaches to jungle with rivers, lakes, and even hot lava acting as obstacles.
  • Take your pick: Choose from eight types of vehicles, from motorbikes and ATVs to buggies, rally cars, and monster trucks--all of which can be used in the same race.
  • Racebook: 16 player online multiplayer features a fully integrated Web service for file sharing and more.
  • Split the difference: For the first time the game features a split screen multiplayer mode for up to four people, so you no longer have to be online to play friends.

Fun:
I recently picked up MotorStorm: Pacific Rift cheaply, and even though I wasn't overly convinced by the demo, since getting used to its quirks and nuances I'm glad I did buy it.

Let me summarise in bullet-point format:

+ The frame rate never struggles and it all moves at a cracking pace.
+ There is absolutely loads of content, including the tournament, local multiplayer and online multiplayer.
+ The physics are brilliant, and really make races feel chaotic and dynamic.
+ Very good pacing and clever difficulty balancing.
+ Good sound effects and a mostly sharp soundtrack (plus there's the option for custom soundtracks).
+ Excellent variety in track design and the differences between each vehicle.

- Loading between different screens can take a little too long.
- Some courses are *very* frustrating until you commit them to memory.
- You always start races in last place.
- Some of the vehicles aren't much fun to drive.
- Most of the trophies are really tough to earn!

It's not the best-looking or most polished racing game in the world, but if like me you're turned off by realism and tweaking under the bonnet and would rather smash through signs, shunt opponents over cliffs or nitro-boost over vast crevasses then this should be right up your street, as it flicks a V-sign to the Gran Turismos or Forzas of the world. The pacing is excellent and it's consistently playable, resulting in easily the most enjoyable racing game I've played since Wipeout HD & Burnout Paradise. I very much look forward to the next entry in the series.

Fun:
Pacific Rift is far superior to the third game (Motorstorm Apocalypse)

The graphics are still beautiful today. The gameplay is raw, exciting and exhilarating. It is also a good challenge for those wanting to delve deeper. A very good package - essential ps3 gaming.

Fun:
Consoles to date: Atari 65 XE (go on, laugh) Nes, Snes, PS1, 2, Wii, PS3.

In every one of those I had racing games and although not a big fan of the genre, I try and diversify as much as possible. I have owned both 'serious' gaming bohemoths like Gran Turismo (1+2 was as far as it went) and excellent fun racing games like Mario Kart (the original is still be best mind) but nothing quite compares to this excellent game. Let's get down to business:

The good:
Graphics - super and post apocalyptic
Physics and general feel of cars is spot on i.e rigs struggle up hills then hard to brake on slopes.
Great Festival Mode (or 1P mode to you and me) which gets more and more difficult. As a sense of scale I am going to try and get gold in all races (erm, 100 in total). Festival mode also 4 themes so you can stick to curses on Mud, Air, Water and Fire - yup, it's pretty mental.
Bikes/Buggies - you can punch opponents and taunting is very funny
Crashes - Best Ive seen on any game.
Unlockables - Still working on this but they're ace so far
Difficulty - mentioned already but real mastery required for some of the courses. You not only learn courses but also need to learn where rocks, metal objects, boats etc etc is or you're toast.
Humour - v funny game

The bad:
Soundtrack - yuk, turned it off so just have noise of cars etc now. Peace at last, no more crappy metal playing in my ear.
Customization - if you like this, this is not the game for you - you cant buy new wheels, bespoke paint job etc etc. It's just all about winning races and unlocking drivers/cars.
Two Player - whilst brilliant fun desnt appear to be an option to omit cpu drivers. Prefer a dual here.

Purists (like my Mrs) don't really like it because she and many others prefer straight-up track racing and street racing. But there's plenty of that by the bucketload on the PS3.

This is unique, slightly mental and utterly gripping.
