4.0 out of 5 stars A Sound, Unpretentious Smartphone 28 Oct 2011
I have had a Motorola Defy + (or'Motorola Defy Plus') for about 10 days. This is a slightly updated version of the original Motorola Defy. Previously I was a Blackberry user and this is my first Android phone and first phone without a physical keyboard.
In a nutshell, I am extremely happy so far, as this is a very compact, light, easy to use, stable and reliable device.
The on-screen keyboard works really well, it only took me a few hours to get used to it. Initially I used the built-in Swype keyboard option, but later tried the standard Android keyboard and found the latter to work perfectly well for me. Portrait mode works best for me (quicker around the smaller spaces between letters) and I can type more quickly and comfortably than on my old Blackberry! Even on an unsteady crowded London Underground train it is easy to churn out messages and navigate around the phone. I wasn't expecting that - it has been a pleasant surprise.
The Android software is great and very intuitive to use, even for a beginner like me. Lots of apps, including plenty of free or advertising powered ones and the list is growing all the time. Even NatWest has just launched a version of their mobile app for Android - something I was expecting to have to do without when ditching my Blackberry.
The device itself is well-made and in my opinion the perfect size for a phone. I nearly went for a device with a bigger 4.3 inch screen, but having looked at those mega-phones in shops, I decided that it might be a bit like putting a table-tennis bat in your pocket when out and about. A phone should be discreet and easy to stash in a front pocket. The Defy + fits the bill perfectly and the screen is big enough and easy to see in all lighting conditions.

I took a long time in deciding what to replace my Blackberry with. I have had two touchscreen phones before the Blackberry, a Nokia N8 and a Samsung Wave 2 and kept hanging up on people when getting the things out of my pocket. Hence the Blackberry, but that went into White screen of death mode and could not be fixed by my local repairer, so now I have the Defy +. You can set the phone so it knows it is in a pocket and you have to swipe the phone answer button to take a call, so you cannot accidently hang up. So now I can get all the free stuff Android offers and get all my calls.

The phone is really compact and all the buttons and touchscreen responds beautifully. It is very customisable and by dropping down to 2g, unless I want data, no wifi or bluetooth and stopping unwanted programmes running in the Application Manager, I have had it running for 3 days and it is down to 30% charge left. This is with minor wifi use, watched a 30 min video played a few albums and played a word game so much my wife complained.

Not quite so pleased with the computer software as it hides so much of what is inside the phone only allowing you to see what Motorola allow you to, however it seems dependable. Also when I synched it with a second computer it removed some of the videos from the original synch, but as I intend to use the newer computer from now on this will not be a problem for me, but may affect other users.

On the whole though I love the useablity of the phone. The loudness and quality of the sound from the internal speaker is commendable and I also have no complaints on the quality of sound produced in my Sennenheiser headphones.

9 month UPDATE:

I was originally quite pleased with the Defy+ although even at 2 days old it rebooted itself.... I could live with a reboot every few days but 9 months on it's rebooting several times a day....so I've ammended my review. The random reboots is a very common problem that I suspect Motorola cannot fix, most likely hardware and software failure that they're not inclined or capable of resolving. If you wonder how often yours reboots then install Reboot Logger from Google Play (market) and it lists every reboot and every power down you do. Lately mine was rebooting 3 times a day!

So it's back to the repair centre that Motorola use - you have to send it off to SBE Ltd in Kent for warranty repairs (at your cost) It's very disapointing that the phone suffers reboots, it always did reboot itself once every few days but I put up with it as otherwise the phone has been great. But now it's rebooting several times a day and so I can't carry on. Let's hope they repair it but I imagine they'll send me a refurbhished phone. Would I recommend the Defy+ having owned it for a while? no probably not...I think next time I won't worry about water resistance and scratch resistance because the screen does scratch and it's clearly not guaranteed waterproof and water ingress isn't covered by the warranty. I'll update when the repair is done.

UPDATE AFTER REPAIR: well I did send the Defy+ back under warranty and it's now been about 3 months since receiving the repaired phone back and they seem to have cured the reboot issue.... I've left the phone on for days and days and only once in the last 3 months has it rebooted itself. So it looks like Motorola do have a cure to the reboot problem.
