5.0 out of 5 stars I like it 28 Mar 2010
By Nat F
I have owned this phone for over a month now and have decided the
following features are worth it...

Music player, it out plays all my friends phones, a bit tinny on max but still great.

Moto nav. it got me back a whole hour quicker than my colleagues on the last trip up north climbing,

Removable SD card, computers at work do not allow us to download programmes to sync
but do have memory card slots. It's great to take and share pics, this is so easy it's amazing.
It even has an unmount SD card feature, ensuring you don't damage card memory in process.

I love the keyboard, I think it will save the touch screen in the long run, 2 friends with i-fone
also like the keyboard option.

The extra sticky out bit at the bottom does have a huge advantage, i can find the sleep/on/off
button really easily as it helps me orientate the phone in the dark (see below)

The other mega mega bonus is.. the keyboard is silent, not being a big sleeper i like to read
at night with tiny nightlight, the keyboard is so quiet that I can now play on internet, text, search
and no noise... This is a bonus because my husband is the lightest sleeper in the world, I wake up...
play on phone and hey presto fall asleep again. The screen also detects how light it needs to be,
not light at all in bedroom at night.

What it needs it camera timer, if it's there.. well I haven't found it, 2 of my old phones had timers.

Also needs sorting, please (I think they have for backflip) take search button off touch screen,
twice in the middle of e-mailing I have brushed against it, annnnoying.

Phone calls cool, security code in shape of pattern also cool.....

1.0 out of 5 stars Milestone - Locked bootloader 24 Jun 2010
This is a fantastic phone. The reason for one star?? It is the fact that it runs Android, Googles OPEN SOURCE platform, yet has a locked bootloader. This is in violation to the terms of the open source agreement as it does not allow us to make changes to our phone that we have the right to make. When the code is released so that the bootloader is opened then this is a 5 star phone. Until that point I rate Motorola as a dictarorship that I shall never deal with again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great hardware, crappy support 23 Jun 2010
By Osten
Don't be fooled by the excellent specifications; the firmware is not up to the task.

Changed from a G1 to the Milestone in February, and while initially happy with the switch due to better and faster hardware, I'm now regretting letting my G1 go.
The firmware for the Milestone is buggy and crashes / reboots almost every day. Motorola has updated the firmware 3 times since I got it, and while some minor annoyances has been fixed the main problem with stability has just gotten worse.

Unlike other android phones the Milestone has a locked bootloader. For Milestones US cousin Droid there's excellent custom firmwares that fixes the stability problems, but since Motorola decided to lock the Milestone (and not the Droid, what's up with that?) we'll have to wait for Motorola to fix it... and so far they're refusing to acknowledge the problem even exists.

Get a HTC Desire or Nexus One, the keyboard on the Milestone is not very good anyway; I end up using a on-screen keyboard 90% of the time.

I really love the hardware, but as a product Motoroloa Europe have really shot themselves in the foot. They take ages to get firmware upgrades to users. I had to install 2.1 manually ove USB when it was finally released as OTA updates have never worked for me. The UI is now much snappier with less false negatives using the touchscreen, however it reboots almost hourly rather than just several times a day, PITA. Turning off 3G fixes this and aparently for some people getting a newer SIM has worked (I have a 5yo vodafone prepay SIM). Why can't Moto acknowledge these issues and provide fixes.

Biggest dissapointment is that the bootloader is locked so I can't install custom firmware. This was half the point of getting an 'Open' Android phone for me.

Motorola Europe, please stop pissing off your customers with stupid policies and poor support for an awesome peice of hardware.

2.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant phone, sadly lacking in openness 5 Jun 2010
This is an outstanding phone and you'll absolutely love it (I do).... until you discover it has a lovely signed bootloader! This means you can't update your phone unless Motorola lets you, unlike the same phone in the USA. Apparently, Motorola thinks less of us here in the UK, since they won't trust us with full access to our own devices. This is against the spirit of openness that Android is supposed to embody. Also, customer service is rubbish (again, unlike in the US) - prepare to be ignored if you have any problems.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could've been Superb but is a below par device 8 Feb 2010
By stoosh
With it's counterpart (Motorola Droid) doing well in America, there were high hopes that the Milestone would make just such an impact. The 3.7" TFT screen oozes quality, the build quality is again superb, the sliding mechanism is solid and there's a reassuring click when the slider moves into place.

However that's were all the goodness stops, this phone is plagued with problems on the operating system front. Constant restarts, painful jerky scrolling when browsing the internet, and dreadful European support bring this phone down. Yes the UK is about to receive firmware update 2.0.1, although it fixes the much maligned camera bug, it also brings with it a host of new bugs with add to the irritance of using this phone on a daily basis.

Droid users in the US will be getting the 2.1 update within the end of the week, it's taken 1.5 months for the UK to obtain a simple revision to the firmware. This in itself speaks volumes, if you want a phone that looks good physically and on paper then by all means purchase the Motorola Milestone, however if you need a reliable phone and one that is supported wholeheartidly by the manufacturer, I suggest that you look elsewhere.
