Many motorcyclists will already be familiar with the Haynes series of "Service and Repair Manuals", each of which describes in detail the maintenance procedures for a specific bike. This book is one of a small collection Haynes call "Techbooks" (there are other volumes on electrics and carburettors) and its ambition is to give you a wider knowledge of techniques used in maintaining and repairing a motorcycle. I had already purchased the service manual for my bike, but I have found the Workshop Practice Manual to be a great source of information, ranging from the merely interesting to the highly useful.
It is written in the typical Haynes style of numerous short paragraphs, each tackling a specific point, with copious supporting photographs and diagrams. The language is kept simple, the structure is clear and no background in mechanics is necessary to follow all the explanations.
There are many different chapters. In some ways the most interesting are those giving information on subjects you won't find explained specifically in the service manuals: the workshop, tools and tool usage, materials, fasteners, working with plastics, chemicals, cleaning techniques, machine tools and so on. There are other chapters more centred on bike tasks, whether it be for the engine, frame, suspension or other areas. While the exact procedures for a given bike would be found in its service manual, here a great deal of background information is also included, giving an overview of the techniques needed. I certainly feel that reading these chapters in parallel with the descriptions from my service manual gives me a better feel for and understanding of the jobs I embark on.

5.0 out of 5 stars good book for motorbike maintenance students 2 May 2013
By R. J. de Bulat TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a technical book more of a guide and certainly not a substitute for a specific workshop manual, but useful for anyone who wants to seriously work on motorbikes as a hobby of as part of a course of study. There is much to study and the book ranges from the basics to more complex tasks and activities, describing the use of tools and techniques. A good book as part of a wider set of books for the budding motor bike mechanic.
