Amazon.co.uk Review

There's "fooling" and there's "Fooling" and confusing the two could seriously damage your wealth. A "fool" trusts his money to the "wise men" of finance-- governments, advisors, pensions companies--the monetary equivalent of cleaning the electric mower with the plug attached. For the "Fool", the cut-and-thrust comes from a sensible dose of knowledge and independence.

Following hot on the heels of the best selling Motley Fool UK Investment Guide, the Investment Workbook turns strategy into action with a series of examples, exercises and cases studies designed to transform you into the Sultan of stocks and the Maharaja of the markets. At very least, the nuts-and-bolts approach will help you get the fundamentals right. "What we're trying to do in this book is to give an everyday basis to the whole business of investing, to make it a bit less like consulting a soothsayer, a bit less of a mystical and unknowable undertaking, and bring it down to more concrete levels."

They succeed too, with information and challenges which will help the beginner and upwards take personal control, invest successfully and plan for the long-term financial future. The interactive A4 format imparts a school homework atmosphere (well, "you bought a workbook and you want your money's worth") but the tasks here have altogether more tangible benefits. With the Fool's inimitable style, industrious hours will fly by. What the subject lacks in thrills, the authors are happy to supply on the side; "It was not uncommon during World War 1 for men in trenches suddenly to fall asleep when the whistle which signalled they had to mount a suicidal attack against heavily defended enemy positions was blown. It was a kind of psychological defence, a mental withdrawal, in the face of an utterly horrific experience which no human being should have to suffer." Symptoms commonly linked to the appearance of your average investment book, they say.

The UK Investment Workbook changes all that. It is insightful, constructive and fun--all practised well within recommended safety standards. The Fools have once again blown the whistle on investment waffle. --Iain Campbell

4.0 out of 5 stars Get control of your own finances!, 4 Jan 2000
This review is from: The Motley Fool UK Investment Workbook (Paperback)
This is not a book for you if you know that you have control of your finances - for example if you are already an accountant or an investor who is confident that you know what you are doing, then save your money. For the vast majority of people who are that little bit afraid of 'having a punt' on the stock markets, then this is for you - it demystifies and gives you the confidence you need. Stop getting ripped off by the professional money men, and take control!

It's an easy read and you can skim the bits you're already familiar with. The humour is not rib-cracking, but it is humour! It makes it a lot less dry than it could have been. Very good value.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit waffly but good on company analysis, 3 Jan 2000
This review is from: The Motley Fool UK Investment Workbook (Paperback)
Repeats much of the information in their useful UK Investment Guide and boy does the jokesy tone pall after a while. But the later sections on company analysis are helpful if you're new to investing as I am.

5.0 out of 5 stars Empower yourself, spend a tenner it's a great investment., 30 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Motley Fool UK Investment Workbook (Paperback)
Having been given some shares through work I realised I had no idea how the stock market 'realy' worked and how best to manage the shares I have.

I browsed many books on the subject after 20 mins of looking at various bland covers and far more dull introductions I came across this book. It claimed it was made for me,after a quick buchess through it, I thought for a tenner why not.

To say the clouds opened and the light shone would be an understatement. I won't go as far to say it changed my life but I will never be that blind/ignorant again.(Thats how 'they' want us to be) I am already in the process of changeing my finances.

This book is not here to make you a millionaire overnight, it is there to give you an insight on how the financial world operates and how to help you get the best out of your money. It preaches long termism, enjoying life and saving for your future. It does not sponsor any products/companies it places the emphasis on taking responsibility for yourself and YOU go and find the information. It points you in the right direction nothing more. There is a Motley Fool Web site which you can visit also, that's if you want to go that far.

It is light hearted in it's style the chapters are not overly complex and haveing a few exercises to work through gives you the confidence to try a few 'real' calculations.

The chapter on Mortgages and Independent Financial advisiors is worth the money itself.

In short if you want one book on your bookshelf to cover family finance make it this one!!!
