There are just a few books on people and management over the years which are an absolute must-have, for anyone who deals with people. This is one of them. It's the ideal combination of research-based theory and people-practical stuff for real-world application. And it's easy to understand: motivators motivate and hygiene factors de-motivate. Well actually, motivators motivate and hygiene factors might motivate to some extent, but they are much more likely to de-motivate. For example, money; a motivator or de-motivator? In general, if people are paid more, it may motivate a little, for a little while, but if they are not paid fairly or what they feel they are worth, it can be a big de-motivator - a turn-off. It's a hygiene factor. Organisation Policies & Structures is a further example of a hygiene factor, while Recognition and Responsibility are examples of motivators. Herzberg's book lays all of this our for us. I have used the book as a key element in teaching IT to MBA students, and I know it has resonance with them, and with most people (wherein there is much nodding of heads in agreement). Read it, and keep it on your bookshelf for ready reference and reminding.
