Product Description

Product Description

Matthieu Ricard, a photographer and Buddhist monk, recently spent one year in retreat at the Pema Ãsel Hermitage (the place of the lotus of light) near Kathmandu. Surrounded by spectacular scenery, nestled between lush valleys and the towering Himalayas, Matthieu meditated daily, waiting for the light that illuminates the path to awakening. Each day from his sublime viewpoint, he contemplated the different subtleties of light, at morning, before dusk and at evening. At the rhythm of one image per week, he has thus immortalized the magnificent landscapes surrounding him. These photographs, taken from the hermitageâs terrace and surroundings, are the fruit of this long âwait without waitingâ, and of the elation of bearing witness to natureâs harmony mixing intimately with the peacefulness of meditation.

About the Author

Matthieu Ricard is the author of numerous books, including Tibet: An Inner Journey, which Thames & Hudson published in 2006. He has lived in the Himalayas for almost thirty years, and has been the French interpreter for the Dalai Lama since 1989.

The book is primarily views taken during Matthieu's retreat up the mountain, and include skies; mountains (in many lights, morning, day, rainbow, rain, evening), plants and other aspects of the natural world which captured his imagination. Similarly, the texts (often one or two lines) serve as a way to inspire. Both photos and texts could work seperately; but together, provide a great insight to another world.

Read this book when you are relaxing, unwinding, and wanting to find a way to another world.

You know once in a while one receives a christmas present so wonderful one cannot help but applaud with clapped hands. I opened this book eagerly christmas morning over breakfast and found myself clapping over each picture and every line of words. I cannot tell you why one should be so joyous over a bunch of pictures of different moods of sky. You gotta see it for yourself.
