Product Description

CD Description

On their self-titled debut for Matador Records, BrightblackMorning Light offered an American roots-infused take on My Bloody Valentine's warm drones, cutting through the maelstrom with touches of gospel, country, and soul. On MOTION TO REJOIN, the New Mexico-via-Alabama duo of Rachael Hughes and Nathan Shineywater continue to gaze not at their shoes, but rather at the star-flecked big sky that hangs over the American landscape. "Hologram Buffalo" and "Oppressions Each" sound like codeine-soaked Stax ballads heard from beyond the next mesa, while "Summer Hoof" is arguably the one and only ambient soul-jazz jam ever recorded. The duo owe an undeniable debt to Spiritualized, yet Brightblack Morning Light also dig through the dirt to get at the original source.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great follow up., 8 Oct 2008
By William J. Walker "Billyjay" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I should state from the outset that I was hugely impressed by this band's previous album(Brightblack Morning Light)and loved its slinky sinuous rhythms and laid back grooves. If you are at all interested in this group get that album now. If you heard that album and didn't like it that much or, come to think of it, even if you did enjoy it, I can't really recommend this album with any conviction.

The problem is not just that the sound is essentially the same as their previous release but that it lacks the variety of tone and rhythm, in particular, the percussion has been mixed so far into the background as to be lost in the murk and the first four songs are barely distinguishable from one another. It's not all bad and if I hadn't heard the first album I might be won over by the Pink Floyd-like sounds of tracks five and six or tolerated the similarities in some of the tracks more readily. Taken in isolation I could see myself giving this album four stars instead of three.

Unusually for me I ordered this at the first opportunity(via Market Place)because I was really looking forward to hearing it, so it is a shame to have to report my disappointment. I do suggest checking out Brightblack Morning Light though.

2.0 out of 5 stars Treading Water, 12 Nov 2008
Like William, I loved the first album and found this one to be a let-down. I guess second albums really are quite difficult to do: we want them to be the same... but different. This has the same dreamy feel as Brightblack Morning Light, with woozy chords swamped in gallons of reverb. But much of the time it just sounds like the band are doing a warm-up jam before getting down to the business of performing songs and it never really gets going. Not that you'd expect huge energy from these guys, but this just feels like its treading water.

5.0 out of 5 stars what is wrong with you pepole?, 18 Jan 2009
This is fab. Sexy, soulful,'deep'and spiritual. Thank god they haven't been "influenced by the bloody Belch Boys or been persuaded by their label to bring in more pop hooks, shorter passages, faster beats...etc,etc.
The feel for me is more like that of "Papa was a rolin Stone" or distant gospel choirs combined with hypnotic drones and a voice with a 'grain' and a conviction that blows most of the diddle e do,try hard, well scrubbed,'witty',ironic...'Sindy' efforts of recent years, clean out of the water. For me one of the best of 08.

Firstly, I have to say that I disagree with the disappointingly low marks and unfavourable reviews given by the previous contributors. Read more
