Ex-actress Caroline Townsend is the mother of nightmares. Her five children can only watch helplessly as she goes out binge drinking and stumbles thorugh one relationship after another. One Christmas after she has been jilted by her current boyfriend and wrecks the childrens holiday plans, they'v had enough and decide to act. Guided by the eldest child, 13 year old Vanessa, they lock her in the sauna in their basement to cure her and change her back into a normal mother again. For three months they hide her, convincing everyone that she is away on a job.
Meanwhile Caroline's ex-husband,tv presenter Robin and his new wife Suzi have plans to start a new family of their own. But things don't quite turn out the way anyone expected.
Despite the seeminlgy simple plot there is actually much more to Mothertime than meets the eye. Gillian White is brilliant at making you feel in certain ways towards the characters at the start of the story, but by the end your opinions change and you realise who the bad guys really are. You'll have to read it to see what i mean.
All in all, an absorbing, funny and entertaining read
